1. Internal Combustion Engine Combustion occurs inside the cylinder and is
the primary factor driving the piston downward. 2. External Combustion Engine Combustion happens outside the engine, like in
a steam engine. A boiler is necessary for the external combustion engine so that heat can be applied. Water boils as a result of this combustion, producing steam. Under pressure, the steam enters the cylinder and pushes the piston down.
