MATH QUIZ- GRADE 9

1. The radius (r) of a circle with area (A) is given by the formula

𝐴
𝑟=√
𝜋

Find the area of a circle of radius 5 centimeters.

Solution:

𝐴
5=√
𝜋
2
𝐴
(5)2 = (√ )
𝜋

𝐴
25 =
𝜋
𝐴 = 25𝜋 𝑐𝑚2
2. A flare is launched from a life raft with an initial velocity of 80 meters per second. How many
seconds will it take for the flare to return to the sea?

Solution :

If an object is launched into the air, the height above the ground after t seconds is given by the formula

ℎ = 𝑣𝑡 − 16𝑡 2
The variable h represents the height of the flare when it returns to the sea, thus ℎ = 0 𝑚

The variable v represents the initial velocity of the flare, thus

𝑣 = 80 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑

Substituting the given data in the formula,

ℎ = 𝑣𝑡 − 16𝑡 2

0 = 80𝑡 − 16𝑡 2
0 = 16𝑡(5 − 𝑡)
Solving for t,
(16𝑡 = 0)|(5 − 𝑡 = 0)
(𝑡 = 0)|(𝑡 = 5)
The flare returns to the sea in 5 seconds.

3. Find the number of days 10 workers can complete a job if 5 workers can complete the same job
in 7 days.

Solution: The number of days a certain job (y) can be completed varies inversely as the
number of workers (x) assigned to do the job.

𝑘
Assuming that each work at the same rate, then 𝑦 = 𝑥 𝑜𝑟 𝑦𝑥 = 𝑘.
Using 𝑘 = 𝑥1 𝑦1 𝑘 = 7(5)
= 35

4. If a map is drawn to the scale 1 𝑐𝑚 𝑡𝑜 190 𝑘𝑚 and the distance between towns A and B
measures 6 cm on the map, what is the approximate distance between the two towns?

𝑥 190
Solution: 6
= 1
𝑥 = 190(6)
𝑥 = 1140 𝑘𝑚
5. The square root of 1 more than twice a certain number is 5 . Find the number.
Solution:
𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑥 𝑏𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
2
𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑠 (√2𝑥 + 1) = 52
2𝑥 + 1 = 25
2𝑥 = 24
𝑥 = 12
6. A baseball diamond is a square 25 metres on a side. How far is it from the home plate to the
second base?

Solution:

𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑡𝑜 2𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒 = √(25)2 + (25)2

= √625 + 625
= √1250
= 35.35 𝑚
