EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

QUARTER 1 - Week 1 & 2

SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH AND CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS

INTRODUCTION
Earth science develops an understanding of the Earth's structure, composition, and natural processes form a
significant part of one’s environment. You are expected to recognize and appreciate the importance of sunlight, resources
such as water and soil, metallic and non-metallic minerals, and atmospheric conditions favouring comfortable existence and
growth in current environment.
Earth has naturally occurring materials of which many are necessary for existence. Earth materials include minerals
and rocks. These materials, along with other materials such as soil, water, air and organic matter are essential for the growth
and survival of organisms, the structure of the land, and the development of human civilization
On this module, you will have two lessons. One is the subsystems of the earth and the other one is rock forming
minerals and classification of rocks and their properties.

Most Essential Learning Competencies

● Recognize the uniqueness of earth, being the only planet in the solar system with properties necessary to support life.
(S11/12 ES-1a-e-3)
● Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems across whose boundaries matter and energy flow.
(S11/10ES-la-e-4)
● Identify common rock- forming minerals using their physical and chemical properties.(S11/12 ES-la– 9)
● Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic ( S11 / 12 ES – 1b - 10)
● Explain how the products of weathering are carried away by erosion and deposited elsewhere.
(S11/12 ES-1b-12)
● Compare and contrast the formation of different types of rock
● Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Describe common rock- forming minerals using their
physical and chemical-properties.

Learning Objectives
1. Describe how Earth's history can be interpreted from the geologic time scale.
2. Identify the layers of the earth.
3. Explain the four subsystems of the earth whose boundaries of matter and energy flow.
4. Compare and contrast the formation of different types of rocks
5. Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
6. Describe common rock-forming minerals using their physical and chemical properties

Topics: Subsystems of the Earth and Rock-Forming Minerals

Pre-test

a. Troposphere b. stratosphere c. Mesosphere d. Thermosphere
1. Where most weather changes occur.
2. Protects Earth from the meteoroids.
3. Has ozone layer that protects Earth from the Suns.
4. Has ionized gas.
5. Its upper region.
6. The gas that exists in the atmosphere in great amount is _________.
a. oxygen b. hydrogen c . water vapor d. carbon dioxide
7. The presence of oxygen in the early atmosphere is due to ____________.
a. lightning b. earthquake C. volcanic eruption d. splitting of water by ultraviolet radiation
8. The following are the sources of oxygen in the atmosphere except ___________.
a. NH3 b. CO2 c. H2O d.NO2

a. Abyssopelagic b. Bathypelagic c .Epipelagic d. Mesopelagic
10. Which zone has plants?
a. Abyssopelagic b. Bathypelagic c.Epipelagic d. Mesopelagic

For numbers 11 to 15, choose from the following terms:

a. Lower core b. Upper core c. Lower mantle d. Upper mantle
11 . Consist of liquid nickel and iron
12. It is the part of the lithosphere
13. Exhibits plasticity
14. Made up of solid nickel and iron
15. It's boundary may be described by the sudden increase in seismic velocity called Moho discontinuity.
16. Which of the following statements is correct?
a. Slow cooling forms small crystals
b. Metamorphic rocks solidify to form igneous rocks
c. Compacting and sedimentation change igneous rocks to metamorphic rocks
d. Magma that crystallizes at the surface is called volcanic rock or extrusive igneous rock
17. The hardest mineral is ___________.
a. calcite b. diamond c. fluoride d. talc
18. Which process is not involved in the formation of sediment?
a. cooling b. deposition c. transportation d. weathering

a. CaCl b. CaCl2 c. CaSiO4 d. CaO
20. Halite or rock salt is ___________.
a. CaCl2 b. Na2O c. SiO2 d. NaCl

Motivation
Earth has many layers because it was shaped by the geologic processes that began at the start of Earth's origin. The
differences of each layer are based on the components that make them up. Have you ever tried cutting a multi- layered cake
before? If you were to cut Earth how would it compare to the layers of the cake? Just like a cake, would the layers be also
made of different materials?

LESSON 1: Subsystems of the Earth

Discussion
Refer to your textbook Earth and life Science for the discussion of the lesson on pages 11 - 26
And answer the guide questions. Write them in your answer sheet.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the different subsystems of Earth?
2. How does sunlight affect the different ocean zones?
3. Using a diagram, show water cycle in a closed
Terrarium.

Activity : Layers of the Earth

Objective :
Identify the following layers.

W-

X-
Y-

Z-

Give the characteristics of the following layer

w-
x-
y-
z-

LESSON 2: Rock -forming minerals and Classification of Rocks

Read on pages 28- 42 of your textbook for the discussion of this lesson . Answer the following guidelines and write
them on your answer sheet
Guide Questions
1. What are the classification of rocks?
2. Classify sedimentary rocks based on their chemical composition.
3. What are the types of igneous rocks based on it's composition?
4. What are the common metamorphic rocks and describe each?
5. How is mineral different from rock?
6. Your place has been found to have large deposits of gold. Are you in favor of making your place a mining site? Explain
your answer.

Activity Ding, ang Bato !

Objective: classify the different kinds of rock minerals Procedure
Classify the following rocks given into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Write your answer on a piece of
paper.
Granite Marble Slate Schist

Pumice Andesite Diorite quartite

Halite Sandstone Limestone

basalt gypsum conglomerate

Guide Questions
1. What is the largest group of rock forming minerals? Name the others.
2. What is the hardest mineral? Proves we
3. List example for each of the renewable and non-renewable

Summary
● The lower mantle exhibits plasticity. The upper mantle and Earth’s crust form the lithosphere. Moho discontinuity
separates the upper mantle from Earth’s crust.
● Earth consist if four subsystems: lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere
● The lithosphere is divided into several plates and the movement of Earth's plates is called plate tectonic.
● The atmosphere has layers based on the temperature, the hydrosphere has different forms like oceans, seas, rivers
lakes and biosphere is the zone of life.
● The types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
● Rock formation follows a cycle described by different processes such as cooling and crystallization, uplift,
weathering, transportation, deposition, lithification and melting.

Generalization
● Earth has a unique structure consisting of different layers and subsystems which are interconnected and continuously
interacting with one another.
● Earth's materials include rocks and minerals. They exhibit characteristic features and have economic value that are
used for its identification and application.

Post-test
Direction: Answer the Pre-test again. Write your answer in your answer sheet.

Performance Task
You are to conduct a survey to assess the possible geological and hydro meteorological hazards that your community may
experience. Write your output in a separate piece of paper.
