Principles of Design

My favorite spot is the living room

area. In the original layout of my favorite
spot 5 of the 6 principles are visible in the
design.

1. Repetition
Repetition is when a single
element is used repeatedly in a
design. Repetitive using of wenge
color for the windows, window
curtains, door, entertainment wall,
and appliances.
2. Variety
Variety is adding an element
that creates contrast or juxtaposition
on the original design to make it more
interesting. To add contrast, putting an
aqua throw pillows to liven up the
area.

3. Rhythm
Rhythm is about creating
space between different elements.
Using the progression of colors from
white to beige to grey to wenge
with accents of different colors
such as silver metal and aqua gives
the flow of the design.
5. Emphasis
Emphasis, compared to the
different principles of design,
highlights a particular element of a
design. The focal point is the
entertainment wall, using a enough components to make an
different color gray with protruded
wall cludding in dark (wenge) finish
with stainless strips inserts. Cove
lighting provided for setting the
mood.
4. Balance
Balance is the equal
distribution of visual weight or
elements in a design. The layout of
my favorite spot has both
symmetrical and asymmetrical
balance that is pleasing to observe
at. The symmetrically arrangement
of the throw pillows and the ledges
on the entertainment wall. The
asymmetrical approach of the solid
color of the sofa and the
geometrical pattern of the throw
blanket and pillows.
6. Economy
The economy of a new
composition or arrangement is put
into the spotlight through sufficient
elements in a design – not having
too many elements but rather
entire picture. Using different
shades of neutral colors such as
beige, gray and white with accent
of silver metal, dark wooden wenge
color and a touch of aqua to
refreshen the tone, all of these
elements compliments each other
bringing a harmonious vibe in the
design.
