DESCRIBING A MAN-MADE PROCESS

FURTHER PRACTICE
Task 1: The diagram below shows how a central heating system in a house
works. Fill in the blanks with the given words.

circulated, pumped, overview, Once, fuelled, enters, flow, taps, boiler

This diagram provides an 1_______________ of a domestic central heating system.

Overall, it shows how the tank, boiler and pipes work to ensure a constant
2_______________ of hot water to both the radiators and the taps. The process is
linear and mainly automated.

The cold water 3_______________ the house and is stored in a water storage tank in
the roof. From there it flows down to the boiler, located on the ground floor of the house.

The boiler, which is 3_______________ by gas or oil, heats up the water as it passes
through it. The hot water is then 4_______________ round the house through a system
of pipes and flows into the radiators, located in different rooms. The water circulates
through the radiators, which have small tubes inside them to help distribute the heat,
and this warms each of the rooms. Some of the water is directed to the
5_______________ to provide hot water for the house. 6 ________ the water has been
through the pipes and radiators, it is returned to the 7_______________ to be re-heated
and 8_______________ round the house again.

Task 3: The diagram illustrates the process that is used to manufacture bricks
for the building industry. Complete the text with the words given.
The Brick Manufacturing Process

following this, oven, kiln, finally

The diagram explains the way in which bricks are made for the building industry.
1_______________, there are seven stages in the process, 2___________ with the
digging up of clay and culminating in delivery. The process is linear and entirely
machinery.

3__________, the clay used to make the bricks is dug up from the ground
4___________ a large digger. This clay is then placed onto a metal grid, which is used
to break up the clay into smaller pieces. A 5___________ assists in this process.

6___________, sand and water are added to the clay, and this mixture is
7___________ into bricks by either placing it into a mould or using a wire cutter. Next,
these bricks are placed in an 8___________ to dry for 24 – 48 hours.

In the 10___________ stage, the bricks go through a heating and cooling process.
They are heated in a 11___________ at a moderate and then a high temperature
(ranging from 200c to 1300c), 12___________ a cooling process in a chamber for 2 – 3
days. 13___________, the bricks are packed and 14___________ to their destinations.

Task 5 (HOMEWORK)
DESCRIBING A NATURAL PROCESS

Task 1. The diagram below shows the water cycle, which is the continuous
movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. Find the
mistakes in the following essay. Rewrite the essay so that it has a higher
bandscore.

The picture illustrated the way in which water passes from ocean to air to land during
the natural process known as the water cycle.
Three main stages are shown on the diagram. Ocean water evaporates, falls as rain,
and eventually run back into the oceans again.
Begin at the evaporation stage, we can see that 80% of water vapour in the air comes
from the oceans. Heat from the sun causes water to evaporate, and water vapour
condenses to forming clouds. At the second stage, labelled ‘precipitation’ on the
diagram, water falls as rain or snow.
At the third stage in the cycle, rainwater may take various paths. Some of it may fall into
lakes or return to the oceans via ‘surface runoff’. Otherwise, rainwater may filter through
the ground, reach the impervious layer of the earth. Salt water intrusion was shown to
take place just before groundwater passes into the oceans to complete the cycle.
