Landscape Urbanism in France
Euralens Centrality
Michel Desvigne
Lens, France
The Louvre Museum opened satellite in Lens, a town in
northern France, and provided the impetus for the Euralens
landscape and urban development plan. Its aim was to
revitalize the wider mining area, which has been in crisis
for 2 generations. The division of this old mining district
into concessional plots created a territory in the form of an
archipelago, where constructed areas resemble low-density
islands. Between these city-islands, old bridle paths crisscross
abandoned areas, an industrial traffic system that has been
left in a state of neglect. The redevelopment of the landscape,
with renewed interweaving of these bridle paths, has created a
shared structure for these cities, and for the connections that
have been lacking between them.
Inside each of these so-called islands, garden paths transform
the ways residents live and move about, but more than
anything else, they function as bearers of densification for each
part of the archipelago. The first completed works perform
double duty: to provide the best conditions for the opening
of the Louvre annex and to initiate a transformation of the
entire territory. In Lens and neighboring district of Liévin and
Loos-en-Gohelle, there has been a reversal in perception: the
outdated and the abandoned have become faces and places
of recovery. Bringing the status of landscape to the old routes
of the mine has brought about a change in the status of these
cities and encouraged neighborhoods in the making. The
elected local representatives spoke of a “green archipelago,”
and this shared image of the future seems to have changed
how the inhabitants perceive their town.

Miséry Quarry Garden

Nantes, France
Chantenay Quarry, a unique and unusual place in the Nantes
landscape, helps to mark the Brittany furrow, which extends
250 km from Nantes to the Pointe du Raz. At the local scale of
Nantes, it is a channel of stones that extends more than 1,200
m from the bottom of rue de l’Hermitage to the pebbles at the
end of rue Joseph Cholet.
The development project responds to the urban plan of Bas-
Chantenay, designed around 3 routes: the hillside, the plain, and
the river. Miséry Quarry constitutes one of the junction points of
these 3 routes. At the meeting point between the 2 geographical
monuments that constitute the furrow and the Loire River,
the site offers an extraordinary place as much by its materials,
viewpoints, microclimate, and history, as by its urban location.
The garden is first and foremost conceived as a unique, open
space, one of connections and interface, in the image of an
urban ecotone, at all scales of territory: between granite
and water, between hills and valley, between upstream and
downstream, between activities and habitats, between different
eras of formation of the city, between wild spontaneous
vegetation of a quarry and the cultivated gardens of Schwob
Square, between different gradients of humidity (from very
dry to aquatic), between the different parks and squares that
integrate it.
To constitute both a place and a connection, the garden is
organized around a flexible and undulating design to form
a specific matrix, a legible form that reveals the original
geography where the hillside formed the bank and integrates all
the components in a coherent whole to create an extraordinary
garden.

Airport Garden has landed on an asphalt road, next to a
meadow and a slag-heap hill, in Calonne-Ricouart, a small
mining town in northern France. After the asphalt road was
dug up, it became a haven for umbelliferous species plants and
thus, a wonderful land field for insects. Umbelliferous flowers
of different heights (from 50 cm to 2.5 m), offer many landing
possibilities for insects to come and pollinate. Large terraces and
benches fill a “waiting room” in the airport terminal in front of
planes landing and taking off, which enables visitors to observe
the flying shows of aerobatic insects.

Jules Ferry Park, a vast emblematic public square, stretches from
west to east, between the town hall and the port, in Lorient, a
seaport town in northwestern France. The square lies in place
of the former wet dock, which was filled in after the bombings
of 1945. This formerly ill-used and aging green space used to
disrupt the urban fabric, as the square had been downgraded
to a parking lot and lost all attractiveness. Other car parks on
the 2 quays, aging plantations, degraded paths, and mineral
and impermeable surfaces all constituted obstructions between
the 2 sides of the town. The link with the sea was broken when
the Palais des Congrès was built, creating an obstacle between
public space and the landscape. This hybrid public space now
combines various settings: the East Indies quay and rambla,
Glotin Square and Water Mirror, the great Faouëdic Meadow,
and an archipelago of garden islands. The East Indies quay has
been transformed into a true rambla, combining a bus lane,
pedestrian and cycling paths, kiosks, and terraces along the
shopping streets.
The main space – Faouëdic Meadow (1.6 ha) – is simple and
open, and people can easily take ownership of it. Garden islands
thicken the existing tree patterns with new plantations that
renew both the tree and ground-cover stratums. These islands
host different microcosms, playgrounds, and places of rest and
contemplation. The Isle of Pines is home to a large custom-
made playground designed in consultation with children from
Lorient. The tower slide, at 7 m high, is the landmark of the
park. A large raft, suspended boats, a climbing course, and tube
tunnels offer a wide variety of games. At the foot of the Palais
des Congrès, the Glotin car park has been transformed into a
large urban square animated by continuous misting and a sheet
of water. The slight slope of the square invites everyone who
enters to play with water and sky.
Water Mirror is usually lively, but can be turned off to host
events and the famous Inter-Celtic Festival. This reorganization
allows multiple uses and atmospheres within this downtown
park: daily uses for all generations but also festive uses and
events on a larger scale, specifically with the Inter-Celtic festival.
Not only to stay within budget but also to take a resolutely
sober and frugal approach, this project was an opportunity to
experiment with various avenues such as the reuse of materials
(road edges, granite cobblestones, granite blocks on site) and
the use of the site’s wood resources (mulch and furniture). Made
of micro-sanded concrete, Water Mirror has large stencils and
saw lines that create a qualitative and interesting paving effect,
which animates this necessarily mineral space. Today Jules
Ferry Park has become a place of daily life again. Free and open
for the people of Lorient, it is also a welcoming space for many
visitors during major events.
