Title: Transport System

Topic: Diffusion

Aim: To observe iodine and starch diffusion.

Equipment/Materials: 250ml glass beaker, visking tubing, small elastic band, pipette, starch solution,
iodine solution, stop clock.

Procedure: 1. Pipette was used to measure the starch solution, and then the solution was placed in the
visking tubing, at 1/3full (around 5Ml)

2. An elastic band was placed around the end of the tube to seal it (to make sure that was
sealed properly and none of the starch solution could leak out turning it black).

3. The visking tubing with the starch solution was placed into the beaker with room
temperature water which was beaker A. (enough water was placed into the beaker so that it could cover
the solution and make it float freely).

4. The iodine solution was measured with the pipette and placed into the beaker (making sure
it had a nice orange colour and making sure it was not too weak because the diffusion would take
forever).

5. It was timed for 20-30 minutes on the stopwatch and the starch was watched unto it turned
black inside the visking tube.

6. Repeat the same steps with the warm water.

Result/Observation: THE TABLE BELOW SHOWS HOW LONG (IN MINUTES) THE DIFFUSION BETWEEN
STARCH AND IODINE TAKES PLACE.

SOLUTIONS TIME OF RATE (MINS)

Iodine and Starch in room temp. water Started to diffuse at 12 mins.
Iodine and Starch in warm water Started to diffuse at 5 mins.

Discussion: Diffusion is the moving of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration until the equilibrium is met. In the observation above it is shown that the iodine and
starch solution diffused in the warmer water than it was in the room temperature water. This is so
because temperature affects the rate of diffusion, meaning that the higher the temperatures, the faster
diffusion takes place. It also shows that the starch in the visking tube started to turn black. This
happened, because the starch was at a low concentration and its particles where unable to move. So the
iodine solution which was at a higher concentration and particles were smaller, started to move into the
visking tube where the starch was and started to diffuse and spread in the visking tube until the
equilibrium was met. Note, not all the iodine solution was diffused into the starch solution, because the
concentration became equal.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that temperature affects the rate of diffusion.
