SOLUBILITY
Learning Points
Explain solubility in terms of particle
theory.

WHAT IS SOLUBILITY?
Solids which dissolve in water are said
to be SOLUBLE in water. The form a
solution.
WHAT IS SOLUBILITY?
A SOLUTION is formed when a
substance dissolves in a liquid.
The substance that is dissolved is called
the SOLUTE.
The liquid which that the substance is
dissolved in is called the SOLVENT.
The most common liquid is water.

Solvent
=Water
When sugar dissolves in
water, it forms sugar
solution.

The water is called the
solvent, and the sugar is
called the solute.

The sugar has not
disappeared but broken into
particles which are too small
to see. It has dissolved.

SOLUBILITY
Substances that
dissolve in liquids are
said to be SOLUBLE,
e.g. sugar in water.
Substances that dont
dissolve in liquids are said
to be INSOLUBLE, e.g.
sand in water.

SOLUTION
When dissolving solids, it is found that
more solid can dissolve at a higher
temperature.

The solid will also dissolve faster at a
higher temperature.

AIM: DOES TEMPERATURE HAVE AN
EFFECT ON THE SPEED OF
SOLUBILITY?
1. Draw out the following table.

INSTRUCTIONS
2. Set-up a test-tube rack with three
tubes.

3. Fill each tube with 5mls of water at
different temperatures.

4. Add half a spatula of solid to each.

5. Stir the contents of each test-tube ten
times using a glass rod.
INSTRUCTIONS
6. Start the stop-watch and see how long
it takes for the substance to FULLY
dissolve in each tube.

7. Draw a LINE graph from the results in
your table.

Put the information in your results table
into a LINE GRAPH.

fair ?

How could you improve the investigation to

were true?

EXPLANATION
Heating a solvent causes the particles in
the solid solute and the liquid solvent to
start moving, so creating spaces between
their particles.

The particles that make up the solid can
now disappear or dissolve between the
spaces between the liquid particles.

The higher the temperature, the more
heat, the faster the dissolving, the more
soluble the solid.
