Topic: 2.4
“Water in the laboratory”
1. Define solvent, solute, and solution.
Ans: Solvent: This is the substance in which a solute (solid) dissolve.
Solute: This is the substance that dissolves in a solvent (liquid) to form a solution.
Solution: A mixture which is formed when a solute dissolves in solvent is called
solution.
2. What does ‘aq’ stands for?
Ans: The ‘aq’ stands for aqueous.
3. What is aqueous solution?
Ans: Solutions made with water are often called aqueous solutions. For example,
solution of copper sulphate in water can be described CuSO4 (aq).
4. How can you test a water to identify if there is anything dissolved in it or not?
Ans: At first we will take water in an evaporating dish. Then we have to heat the water,
then we will see that the water will evaporate, and if any soluble solid is present in that
water it can be observe from evaporating dish as a solid residue. Then we can tell that,
this liquid is a solution and a soluble solute was dissolved in it.
We repeat the same procedure for another sample of water, we can see that if
there is no solid residue is left behind the evaporating dish, then we can conclude that it
is not solution.

*The diagram is optional

5. How can you identify a solid dissolve in water or not?
Ans: At first put some water in a test tube, then add small amount of solid into it and stir
carefully with a glass rod. Then warm the test tube so that the solid dissolves. And if

there are no solids behind the test tube then it will prove that the solid is soluble and we
can observe a clear solution.

6. What is solubility?
Ans: The amount of solute that will dissolve in water to make a saturated solution is
called the solubility.

7. The solubility depends on

 The amount of water.
 The temperature of the water.
8. Important points:
 It is easier to dissolve a solute in a lot of water.
 It is easier to dissolve a solute in hot water.
 The solubility increases as the temperature increases.
 The solubility decreases as the temperature decreases.
9. What is saturated solution?
Ans: A saturated solution is a solution which contains as much as dissolved solid as
possible at a particular temperature. There must be undissolved solute present.

10.Describe an experiment to show how the solubility changes when temperature

changes.
Ans:

At first we will need beaker some solute and a beaker then set the apparatus as shown
in diagram, then add more solute to the water when the temperature of the water is
colder. After adding more solute we will observe that less solute dissolve in cold water
than hot water. So the solubility decreases when temperature decreases.
When the temperature of the water increases by Bunsen burner, more solute present in
the beaker will dissolve. This means hot water can dissolve more solute than cold water.
So the solubility increases when temperature increases.
11. What does solubility curve shows us?
Ans: The solubility curve shows us the solubility of a solute at different temperature. This
information can be shown on a graph.
12. How gas is dissolved in fizzy drinks?
Ans: The gas like Carbon dioxide is dissolve in water to make fizzy drinks but it is difficult
to dissolve carbon dioxide in water so the gas is pressurized in the water. If we think
about fizzy drinks when we open the cap gas is released out as well as the pressure.
