CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Amidst the ongoing pandemic the interaction between the students are lessened and

were introduced to a new learning modality which is the online learning to minimize the

spread of the virus. Correspondingly, the students were acquired with a technology and

internet to access their requirements throughout the distance learning. New student habits

have emerged. Some are mostly bad habits, but students around the world have tried to

overcome this. One particular way is the Pomodoro technique.

Pomodoro Technique is a type of time management developed by Francesco Cirillio

(1980) which can improve your time managing skills and boosts your productivity which

improves one`s learning efficiency. It is a method that is based on a 25-minute stretches of

focused work broken by five-minute break. For example, when working on a computer, they

should step away from the desk and do some kind of physical activity and should stay

focused on a task during the pomodoro and avoid interruption. They should also protect

their pomodoro from both internal and external distractions.

Pomodoro (plural: pomodori) is a work interval and an Italian word for tomato. It

was named after the timer he used which is shaped like a tomato. For many people, time is

an enemy and crucial. Anxiety generated by “the ticking clock”, especially when there is a

deadline, contributes to ineffective work and study behaviour, which fosters procrastination.

This technique makes your tasks less intimidating, which can reduce your stress towards

your workloads and may prove your weapon against the procrastination. (Shona Waters,

PhD. 2022). Pomodoro motivates you to finish all the tasks you`re doing, it helps you to
overcome the stress given by the procrastination, and to get the better of the bad habits

which are stress, anxiety, fatigue, and depression.

The researcher’s purpose is to determine the effectiveness of Pomodoro Technique

for the reason that it is timely relevant, and significant to the students who lack time

management. Thus, this study aims to analyze the perception of the Junior High School

Students of Dingras Faith Academy Incorporated about the effectiveness pomodoro

technique through this quantitative phenomenological study.

Statement of the problem

This study was conducted to highlight the effectiveness of Pomodoro technique to

every student.

Specifically, the study aims to provide answers to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of?

a) Age;

b) Sex; and

c) Grade level?

2. What are the effects of Pomodoro technique used by the students in studying their

subjects in terms of?

a) Reviewing;

b) Communicative abilities; and

c) Time consumed in finishing the task?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the Pomodoro technique and the students’

academic performance?
Significant of the study

The study is focused on knowing the effects of Pomodoro Technique and it is a great

significance because it determines the procrastination behaviour and academic motivation of

the respondents for them to be able to adjust the sudden change from face-to-face learnings

to online learnings. In addition, this study will help and beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will help the students to achieve a focus timed-work session to

accomplish their tasks and to keep attention on their studies and to maintain it for a longer

period. Not only that, we can also relearn to concentrate and enter to a focused state.

Teachers. This study will help the teachers to improve their methods of working. It

is a great scope for teachers’ stress. In the short breaks between two pomodoro sessions,

teachers can relax and feel at ease. Moreover, pomodoro technique is useful to every

teacher’s time management to help balance the amount of time spent on the students’ work.

Future Researchers. This research can serve as a guide and insight of how

pomodoro technique could be best use for both students and teachers. This also helps the

future researchers working on related projects and would give the future researchers a

knowledge or a better understanding to both teachers, students, and everyone involved.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will be conducted to determine the impacts of Pomodoro technique to the

academic performance of the Junior High School of Dingras Faith Academy Inc. as

perceived by teachers and students of the Junior High School students of Dingras Faith

Academy Inc. This study is only limited to the grades 7,8,9, and 10 of Junior High School

Students of Dingras Faith Academy Inc. with a total population of 90 students. In addition,

this study was conducted during the first quarter of the school year 2022-2023 at DFAI. The

information needed will be gathered using the checklist style research-made questionnaire
about the effects of Pomodoro technique as a survey reference which makes this study

concrete and practicable, enabling the researchers to analyze the data provided by the

respondents.
