CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

According to the Branford Hall Career Institute (May 17,2016), Time Management

is a great quality of any successful student. Managing out time wisely helps us balance

our daily lives and gives us more structure and moments to partake in the activities we

enjoy. But when we get very busy, managing our responsibilities can sometimes

become overwhelming. A student who is having trouble completing their studies or other

daily tasks, taking steps to manage and plan out your daily ahead of time can help

make life easier. It easy to get distracted during the day. It can be hard to focus when

your mind is wondering off to many different places, staring at music, videos, or texting

on the smartphone. One key step to completing your tasks is to avoid distractions. You

need to discipline yourself if you want to stay on with your studies, chores, and other

school project.

Procrastination is one of the worst habits of those with poor time management

skills. once you get into the pattern of procrastinating, it can become hard to strip.

Distractions can be hard to manage especially when you mind needs some relaxation

time. Take 10 minute breaks in between your chores, but remember no to procrastinate.

Remind yourself that you’ll spend more energy thinking about the tasks you haven’t

completed if you get distracted by the TV or your phone.

One mistake for students with poor time management is that they don’t complete

their most important tasks first when you plan out your schedule for the next day, make
sure you focus on work with the closest deadlines. If you think you need more time to

study or learn a new concept from your class notes, begin by reviewing that particular

subject. If you complete your hardest and most urgent work first, you’ll must likely have

more time for smaller tasks. If you get through your next important tasks in the

beginning of the day or during your designated study time, you can mind and help focus

more on your notes. Then you can complete short, less urgent tasks, and go back to

studying.

The aim of the current research is to determine the relationship between the time

management and skills of the students. Student’s time management can be considered

as are of the aspect that can move a student to be a good student. A good time

management is vital for students to shine. However, some of the students do not have a

good time management skills that has negatively affect their life and their academics.

The usage of time by students in higher education institution is related to their daily

routines and activities. Students’ time management can also affect stress level of

students as they need to cope their tasks and their personal achievements

It is to analyze that how affectively they are managing their time for achieving

their academics standard. Careful planning of your day is also another great time

management activity. How many time have gotten to the end of the day and wondered

where the time went? Taking time to plan how you will spend your hours in a day helps

to keep them from slipping away. Computer can help us in this area. Computer helps us

to invest our time differently and accomplish more. The convenience of computers is

that we are able to access the computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a
year. This gives our society time to spend our knowledge and create new opportunities

for our selves.

Theoretical Framework

There are a number of theories which have been developed in relation to time

management. This paper provides an analysis of these theories and demonstrates how

these can be applied to increase students efficiency of time management.

The Bucket of Rocks The Goal-Setting Pareto’s 80/20 Rule

Theory (Mancini 2003) Theory (Pynes 2008) Theory (Vilfredo Pareto
p.155) 1906)

Students’ Perception

Theory of Gender
differences and identity

Effective Time Management

Figure 1

The Bucket of Rocks Theory, states that the important things are supposed to be

done first (big stones) and then move on to the less important things (pebbles and

sand). Afterwards, finally proceed to do the unimportant things (water). If the

unimportant things or the less important things are to be done first, we will not have the

space to do the important things in our lives. Thus, students’ organize themselves well

to be sufficient for different activities and helps tackle difficult or unpleasant tasks

without delays.

The Pareto’s 80/20 Rule Theory states that by identifying the key 20% activities that

generate 80% of the results that a person wants to achieve, one can make sure to

prioritize these activities. From Pareto’s rule, a manager can analyze and identify the

activities that produce the 80% results that are desirable. From this, students’ accurately

judge the amount of time needed to complete their tasks making them successfully do

some urgent matter. Goals assist us to properly focus and work towards achieving the

things that are important to us. The Goal-setting theory advanced by Locke can be used

to effectively manage a person’s time. This theory is based on the premise that a

person will be more motivated to perform having clear and specific goals and objectives.

In terms of gender, females have become considerably more assertive, competitive,

independent, and analytical in the last four decades. Vences Cyril, A. found out that

female students are better than the male students in time management. Thus, the

teacher should train the male students on effective time management skills and create

interest to the students by giving assignments, seminars related to managing time etc.

Both time management and stress are significant predictors of academic achievements.

Thus, students’ finish their tasks early and gives more available time for their

responsibilities.
Statement Of The Problem

This study aims to determine the Effect of computer towards Information and

Communication Technology Students’ time management.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following:

1. Profile of the students in terms of:

1.1 Gender

2. The effect of time management in using computer as perceived by the Information

and Communication Technology Students.

3. The significant difference between the perception of the Information and

Communication Technology Students when grouped by gender.

4. A recommendation that can be based on the findings.

Significance Of The Study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will be beneficial to the students because it allows them to

manage their time and allows them to accomplish more in a shorter period of time,

which leads to more free time, which lets you take advantage of learning opportunities,

lowers your stresSs, and helps you focus, which leads to more career success.

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers because it will help them to

manage their time easier and allows them to properly evaluate the assignment and offer

feedbacks to students. It can help them find more efficient to break up grading materials

into small groups that are graded each day than to work on grading the work of the

entire class on the same day.

Future Researchers. Through this study, they can manage their time and directly

reduce their stress level. Fewer surprises. Fewer tight deadlines. Less rushing from

task-to-task and place-to-place. Also, it will help them get more done. Being productive

is one of the main goals of time management. When they are aware of what they need

to do, they are able to better manage their workload. They will be able to get more of

the right tasks than in less time. Lastly, it can help them lessen reworks. Being

organized results in less rework and mistakes.

School Administrators. The same applies to school administrators, who are

often tasked with the unenviable job of running an entire school without dropping the

ball. The stakes are high and school administrators — unlike plenty of other job roles —

cannot afford to falter. It is in this high pressure and high stakes scenario that time

management comes in to save the day. For a school administrator, the difference

between a smoothly functioning school and a disastrous, unwieldy behemoth might just

come down to how well they manage their time.

Community. This study will surely help the community for time management is a

factor that anyone should exercise. Firstly, Time management will help people to be

less overwhelmed. It helps people to focus on what’s important, remove what’s not, and

to feel less overwhelmed and less stressed. Secondly, time management can also

reduce the number of problems that people usually face, which in turns to get more

done. Lastly, time management can also help people to stand out. When people

manage their time well, they accomplish more, and it makes them to look good towards

anyone.
Definition Of Terms

To unlock the difficulties, the following terms were defined.

Time management. the ability to use one's time effectively or productively,

especially at work.

Cope. As used in the study, cope is to deal with and attempt to overcome

problems and difficulties.

Convenience. As used in the study, convenience is a quality or situation that

makes something easy or useful for someone by reducing the amount of work or time to

do something.

Designated. As used in the study, designated is chosen for a particular job but

both officially doing that job yet.

Efficiency. As used in the study, efficiency is capable of producing desired results

without wasting material, time, or energy.

Extensive. As used in the study, extensive is a large in size or amount: very full or

complete.

Incorporate. As used in the study, incorporate is include (something) as part of

something else.

Partake. As used in the study, partake is to have a share or part of something

along with others.

Procrastination. As used in the study, procrastination is to be slow or late about

doing something that should be done: to delay doing something until a later time

because you do not want to do it, because you are lazy, etc.

Retrieved. As used in the study, retrieved is to get and bring (something) back

from a place.

Storehouse. As used in the study, storehouse is large amount or supply of

something.

Time Management. As used in the study, time management is the ability to use

one’s time effectively or productively, especially at work.

Various. As used in the study, various is used to refer to several different or many

different things, people, etc.

Vital. As used in the study, vital is extremely important.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related Literature

On the basis of time management people can be divided into three groups.

The first group takes time management necessary for achieving success, the second

group takes time management as an unnecessary intervention and the third group

likes to change something in life but lacks concentration and hard work. These three

groups can be observed among students. What to do, when to do and that to do

thinking allow students to perform necessary work qualitatively. Carrying out

timing continuously for continuous optimization of life and improvement of personal

time management can provide high quality development of future profession (Kirillov

et al., 2015).

Development in society meant that role of free time is becoming very important and

leisure time plays significant roles in the lives of children and adolescents. The way

in which young people spend their leisure time affects their behaviour, growth and

life. Thus, it is necessary to take care of one’s free time (Gajewska & Piskrzynska,

2017).

According to Lungiswa Nyatyowa (September 22, 2017) How you use your time will

determine how well you do as a students. Your time is your greatest resource, and

when used effectively, it allows you to focus better to stay organized and to manage

your workload better. It is important to remember that no student has more time than
another; that’s why good time management can make all the difference in achieving

your goals.

According to Kelci Lynn Lucier (March 25, 2018) You have more time to just relax

and enjoy your time in school. Let’s be honest. Even if you do decide to throw caution to

the wind and just hang out with some friends in the squad, that Research paper you’re

avoiding is still fluttering around in the black of your brain. When you’re good at

performance of the Petroleum Institute (PI) in Abu Dhabi, the UAE. They found out that

time management is related to academic performance of the Petroleum Institute (PI)

The literature revealed that time management practices that connected to the

individual's awareness and attitudes about time management and is comparable the

perception of having control over time. Therefore, time attitudes comprise the

perception that the individual is in control of time the perception that the person is

efficiently managing his time and the perception that the individual is making

constructive utilization of time (Karim et al., 2015)

Gender and Academic Achievement among Sample of Students at AI Ain University of

Science and Technology, UAE " by Ahmad Saleh AI Khalib, he investigated the

relationship between time management, perceived stress, gender and academic

achievements among United Arab Emirates students. He found out that both time

management and stress are significant predictors of academic achievement. Moreover,

the good predictor of academic achievement was found to be the combined effect of

time management and perceived stress.

In the paper entitled " Time Management and Academic Achievement of Higher

Secondary Students " by A. Vences Cyril, he explore the relation between time

management and academic achievement of Higher Secondary Students. He found out

performance of the Petroleum Institute (PI) in Abu Dhabi, the UAE. They found out that

time management is related to academic performance of the Petroleum Institute (PI)

male students. Their research study has shown that successful students are good time

managers.

In the paper entitled " The Impact of Time Management on the Students Academic

Achievements " by Shazia Nasrullah and Muhammad Salqib Khan, they investigated ths

relationship between the time management skills and academic achievements of the

students. They found out that time management is highly related to the academic

achievement of the students. Their studies determined that student's behavior in the
category of time planning was at the highest level while the bahaviour in the category of

time management was at the lowest level.

In the paper entitled " The Effect of Time Management on Academic Performance

among Students of Jazan University " by Wasan Siddiq Yahya Alsalem, the researcher

investigated the relationship between time management skills and academic

performance of students. The researcher found out that students who had opportunities

to practice time management skills revield better academic performance in addition to

the differences in the time management level between students according to the faculty,

gender and curriculum.

In the paper entitled "Effective Time Management for Haaga - Helia UAS

International Students Porvoo Campus " by Uchenna John Obijiaku, he investigated the

importance of effective time management for international students at Haaga - Helia

UAS Porvoo Campus. He found out that different students had several experience

regarding time management. His research study found out that time management

serves as a tool for self - organization for a student making them to have sufficient time

for different activities.

This result implies the weighted mean of the students’ perception towards their

level of time management and how it differs in terms of gender. For the female
respondents, their time management has a great effect in the academic performance

with a weighted mean of 2.48. This means that the most female have a great effect in

their time academic performance. This implies that time management have a great

effect on their academic performance. On the other hand, for the male respondents,

their time management has a great effect also with a weighted mean of 2.39. This

means that all male have a great effect on their academic performance. Both male and

female has the same perception that time management has a great effect in the

academic performance.

On the item number 1, the weighted mean is 2.37 which implies that time management

has a great effect on their academic performance through using computer.

2017). Therefore, many students successfully prioritize their tasks to do some urgent

matter.

On the item number 2, the weighted mean is 2.17 which implies that time

management is less effective to their academic performance through using computer. In

accordance to Lungiswa Nyatyowa (September 22, 2017), Your time is your greatest

resource, and when used effectively, it allows you to focus better to stay organized and

to manage your workload better. Therefore students have meet deadlines without

rushing at the last minute.

On the item number 3 the weighted mean is 2.23 which implies that time

management is less effective to their academic performance through using computer. In

accordance to kelci Lynn Lucier (March 25, 2018), Even if you do decide to throw

caution to the wind and just hang out with some friends, that research paper you are

avoiding will still flatter around in the back of your brain.

On the item number 4, the weighted mean is 2.33 which implies that time

management is less effective to their academic performance through using computer. In

accordance to the paper entitled “ Effective Time Management for Haagahelia UAS

International Students Provoo Campus “ by Uchenna John Obijiaku, he found out that

time management serves as a tool for self-organization for a student making them to

have sufficient time for different activities. Therefore, students tackle difficult or

unpleasant tasks without delays.

On the item number 5, the weighted mean is 2.47 which implies that time

management has a great effect to their academic performance through using computer.

On the basis of time management people can be divided into three groups. The

first group takes time management necessary for achieving success, the second

group takes time management as an unnecessary intervention and the third group

likes to change something in life but lacks concentration and hard work. These three

groups can be observed among students. What to do, when to do and that to do

thinking allow students to perform necessary work qualitatively. Carrying out

timing continuously for continuous optimization of life and improvement of personal

time management can provide high quality development of future profession (Kirillov
et al., 2015). Therefore, students adapt/adjust to any changes and re-evaluate their

priorities.

On the item number 6, the weighted mean is 2.30 which implies that time

management is less effective to their academic performance through using computer. In

accordance to the paper entitle “ The Relationship between Time Management and the

Academic Performance of Students from Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, the UAE “ by

Faisal L. Migdadi, Abdulla F. Almomani, Mohammad T. (Shadid Marsdhagal) and Nabil

M. Elmousel, they found out that successful students are good time managers.

Therefore, students commit their time effective and accomplish more.

On the item number 7, the weighted mean is 2.60 which implies that time

management has a great effect on their academic performance through using computer.

In accordance to the paper entitled “ Time Management and its relation to Students’

Stress, Gender and Academic Achievement among Sample of Students at Al khalib, he

found out that both time management and stress are significant predictors of academic

achievements. Therefore, students finish their tasks early and gives more available time

for their personal responsibilities.

On the item number 8, the weighted mean is 2.40, which implies that time

management has a great effect on their academic performance through using computer.

In accordance to the paper entitled “ The effect of time management of Academic

Performance among Students of Jazan University “ by Wasan Siddig Yahya Alsalem,

he found out that students who had opportunities to practice time management skills
reviled better academic performance. Therefore, students are able to minimize their

interrupted time doing unnecessary things.

On the item number 9, the weighted mean is 2.70 which implies that time

management has a great effect on their academic performance through using computer.

In accordance to the paper “ The Impact of Time Management on the Students

Academic Achievements “ by Shazia Nasrullah and Mohammad Salqib Khan, They

found out that time management is highly related to the academic achievement of the

students. Therefore, students are able to do their tasks in a creative way in a short

period of time.

On the item number 10, the weighted means is 2.70 which implies that time

management has a great effect on their academic performance through using computer.

The literature revealed that time management practices that connected to the

individual's awareness and attitudes about time management is comparable to the

perception of having control over time. Therefore, time attitudes comprise the

perception that the individual is in control of time and/or efficiently managed time. The

perception that the individual is making is constructive utilization of time (Karim et al.,

2015). Therefore, students do their task in a useful way and focus on time and on the

things they need to do.

The overall weighted mean is 2.43, which implies that the time management

through using computer has a great effect in managing their time.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the overall result of the study and derives a conclusion

in the data presented, analyzed, and interpreted in the previous chapters. It provides a

beneficial guide to the future researchers to know what would be the best option to

make.

Findings

Based on the analysis of data, this study revealed the followings:

 The Senior High School students’ perception towards the effect of time
