Slide 1

Okay, So we are here to present and deal with the assigned topic which is the
Introduction and Approaches that underlies across to Module 1 Facilitating Learner-
Centered Teaching.

Slide 2
Next, get to know our group first. So I am Ms. Marlyn Panopio, and I’ll be with Ms. Jade
Lacerna and Ms. Heartlyn Palaya.

Slide 3
So since nakapag-pray na tayo, we will skip this slide nalang.

Slide 4

So, Hello. A pleasant morning each and everyone. To Sir Benj and to my all my

classmates, friends and dear future educators.

We have here a simple saying by Albert Eintein, so sabi dito, Everybody is genius. but if

you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is

stupid.

Meaning to say and I do believe that each one of us is different, we own a different

talent, interests, weaknesses and strengths. In order for us to thrive and excel, we

needs to be put into the right environment whereas to get to exercise our strengths and

passion, not our weaknesses. So, live our life to the fullest and live our life with a

purpose.

Goodmorning once again.

So to continue,
Slide 5 (Learning outcomes and objectives)
The following are the learning outcomes and objectives, (read)
-As you can see here, aside from the fact that we are going to discuss learner centered
teaching, we have to differentiate it also from teacher-centered teaching or learning.

Slide 8 (Lesson Outline)

So to further guide us in our discussion, this will be our lesson outline. First is the
definition, wherein we have to define Learner-centered teaching, characteristics of
Learner-centered teaching, benefits and then learner – centered teaching vs. teacher-
centered teaching.

Slide 9
I prepareD here uhm 10 jumbled words, and all you have to guys is to guess it to form a
word that will connect us to our today’s discussion. Are you ready future educators?

Don’t hesitate to unmute your microphones if you know the answer.

So, I hope you enjoy guessing those words.

So, Ill be the one to explain the introduction of it and later on, my two partner will be
explaining the approaches.

Slide 3 (What is learner-centered teaching?)

So let us now start for the definition of or in answering the question, What is learner-
centered teaching?
So I am sure that you are all familiar with this uhm because for sure it was a difficult
thing before, but in this course or in this subject we are going to dig deeper about what
learner centered teaching is.
So the first thing that we can across with is that
 inverting the traditional teacher-centered teaching. (so meaning to say that we
invert, meaning that we will not follow teacher center teaching, instead, of course,
we will be doing the learners and their teaching.
 So Understanding of the learning process and putting students at the center of
the learning process. (so in order for us to understand what learner-centered
teaching is you have to understand first no?, the learning process um under
learners centered teaching and then, so that you can be able to put the students
or the learner at the center of the learning process.
 Shift the focus of the activity from the teacher to the learners. (so meaning to say
na in the teacher-centered teaching, the center or the focus is the teacher. But in
the learner’s centered teaching, the one of the center are the students. Thus the
focus of the activities, the focus of the teaching learning processes are the
students.
Slide 12
So ayan,
 Emphasizes what the learners do and not what the teacher does. (As you can
see here in this statement is that, the emphasis is on what are those things
that the learners can do and not what the teachers does, so, what matter
here is the learner. So since it is a learner centered teaching, everything
that will happen to learners will be our main concern and
 Focuses on skills and practices in a lifelong learning, creative thinking and
independent problem-solving. (So since the focus is on the students, the center
are the student then therefore there should be the development of the skills and
practices of learners as a lifelong learners. So meaning to say when we speak of
lifelong learners  that the study of the students will not end when they step
outside the school but it should be a continuous process so that's why it is a
lifelong learning. And then in doing so, we should develop among them creative
thinking and independent problem solving, so creative thinking and independent
problem solving are both skills that are essential in being a lifelong learner and
these two skills are also essential in the day to day activity, no? because we
always encounter problem solving, problems that we need our creativity in
solving them

 And it also insist that the learners to actively construct their own knowledge. ( so
unlike in subject-centered or teacher-centered, students or learners they are
encouraged to build their own knowledge, so it doesn't mean that they have to ,
not to follow the books or not to follow the content and discuss them, when we
think of uh they should actively construct their own knowledge is that they should
not rely on memorization or in following step-by-step process no but from the
activities that are given to them they can construct their own knowledge based on
their own understanding so meaning to say still, that the center of the teaching
and learning processes will always be the learners.

Slide 13
So perhaps you might ask, Why do we need to implement a learner-centered teaching if
uhm since from our ancestors, from our parents or grandparents, when they study no,
mostly when they study it is subject centered or teacher centered. So why implement
now learner centered teaching where in fact this is new and we do not know yet no
perhaps if if this will be successful in the next 10 or 20 years, now these are the
answers
1. There is a need to produce learners who are critical thinkers, problem solvers and
creative.
(so why, simply because the kind of world that our learners have today are not the same
as the kind of world that our ancestors our parents grandparents, no? Iba ang mundo ng
mga estudyante ngayon unlike sa mundo ng mga magulang natin before. thus there is a
need for skills like critical thinking problem solving and creative thinking.
2. so there's also another explosion there are knowledge everywhere because of the
internet because we are now living in a digital world so it is easier for us to gather
knowledge no? but alongside with knowledge explosion there's a need for making
sense of such knowledge not just memorizing them. Okay, so everything most of
the things now can be accessed online but how do we use such knowledge how do
we utilize that knowledge in order for us to become a creative thinker or a critical
thinker or problem solvers. Okay, so knowledge acquisition right now is quite easier
because there are a lot of sources but how to--- how to use such knowledge you
know uhmm we need to guide our students in that particular part.

3. LCT or learner center teaching can improve student engagement and ownership of
learning. ( so when we speak of student engagement are they a participative in
various learning activities, how do they perform um or are they just passing no, so
one thing about learners and teachings that students are actually active okay so and
teachers aren't just facilitators so if you'll notice the subject itself is facilitating
learners centered teaching it's not teaching learner-centered ahhh learners, right? so
it's facilitating, so in that case we facilitate learner-centered teaching okay?

Slide 14
learner-centered teaching can lead to
1. increase student engagement with the content . (so the content is the subject
matter so the more they are engaged the more they can learn. That are the days
na the teachers will keep on talking and the students will just listen.
2. student engagement means that they have to search for the knowledge found in
the content so there will be deep learning and it can lead to deep learning no. so
it's not just superficial like memorization or knowing the definition, it is more than
that.
3. long-term retention
4. next acquisition of critical thinking or creating problem solving skills (so because
um they are at the center so they are engaged with the different activities they can
be able to acquire skills like critical thinking skills and creating problem solving
skills, which are, again, essential in the real world and there will be positive
attitude toward the subject being taught, so again are these that we are all that
our learners are afraid in a certain subject like they,, do not like science they do
not like mathematics they do not like a filipino or any other subject because since
they are engaged with the different activities and if all the teachers will implement
learners and their teaching then all students are engaged thus they will realize the
importance of the subject they can be able to see the practical application of them
so there will always be positive attitude toward the assumption being taught and
5. confidence in knowledge or skills (so since they are the ones who gained the
knowledge or the skills they did not just listen but they were able to float the
existence of such knowledge the youth destination of such knowledge then
therefore there will be confidence among them

Slide 15
Now, what are the characteristics of a learner-centered learning.

So teaching and learning personalized. So, why personalized? because we will consider
a lot of things when it comes with facilitating learner-centered teaching, you have to
consider the learning style of the students, you have to consider the multiple
intelligences of the students because unlike in the teacher centered wherein the
approach is only one no, which is discussion when the teacher discuss the lesson
everyone should listen.
Teaching and learning is personalized.
 so it gives interest aspiration to individual students. (so that means if this will be
interesting this is the kind of activity that you will be doing, if you are good in
singing then do this activity, if you are doing dancing then do this activity, if you
are not good at it and you are good in uh in making or in creating in problem
solving then discipline your activity.
 the teachers have the option of structuring the learning environment that suits
them in their students. ( so we can divert from the standard pencil and paper test
or the standard discussions inside the room, okay. so as the case arises we can
divert from them, so meaning in a learner-centered teaching you might see
teachers who are conducting classes outside the room perhaps uh in the park of
the school or in under the tree or any, uhm anywhere else no, as long as it suits
them and their students.
 Teachers make the optimal use of the facilities available to them. ( so meaning to
say that if there's a need for a laboratory uh activity then go to the laboratory if
there's a need to to utilize ict then go to the computer room and there's a need to
cook then go to the TLE room. so there should be optimal use of the facilities,
ahhhmmmm library uhmmm, anywhere else in the in the classroom or even
outside no? provided that there could be permit in conducting classes outside.

Slide 16
 and then they have learned the knowledge and skills. ( so students have the
flexibility to learn so they are not just enclosing a box or in ,Oh, okay answer
activity one two and three, no!!! there should be a lot of options,
again we will go back to the first one it gives interest , aspirations to individual students
and that's it. learners learn anytime and anywhere students give opportunities to learn
their own way.

Slide 17
 okay so yan so, students need to have a clear idea okay and
 instructions must be easy to understand and comprehensive. ( so do not use
highfalutin words, no. just simple English, simple sentences will do for you to be
able to give instructions.
 when students evaluate their own work it will help them mastery over the subject.
 students working in a group they involve more in activities because there are
opportunities for discussion and assisting peer students.

Slide 18
 students can work on various activities to their own needs and interests. (okay so
um than are the days wherein we met, we measure the ability of our students
using only one tool okay so um in learner center teaching you provide them with
rubrics depending on the kind of activities that you ask them to do or they they
chose among the set of activities that you have given them
 and learner-centered adoptable instructional tool.

Slide 19
so now, um, what are or what then are the benefits no of a learner-centered teaching?
 okay so permits opportunities to connect the content for real life. ( in facilitating a
learner-centered teaching you should provide activities wherein the students can
be able to connect the knowledge that they have learned in your lesson to their
real-life situation.
 promote greater student-faculty and student-to-student interaction. ( so there is a
greater student teacher interaction because there will be given feedback
guidance from the school from the teacher to the student and then there will also
be students to student interaction wherein they can exchange ideas , they can
bind each other there could also be peer-to-peer tutoring wherein those who are
not in behind will be helped by those who are advanced
 increases student retention

Slide 20
 okay so in addition to that there will be also improvement in students self-esteem.
( since they are confident in the knowledge that they have, so there will be also
improvement in their self-esteem
 and provides for improvement of social interaction skills, so since the LCT have
provided a greater interaction between the student and the teacher and student to
student, then there will be an improvement of social interaction skills, they can be
able to talk to each other, they can be able to express themselves and --- greater
acceptance of others, so since there are more time in collaboration so there, they
will develop among them the to accept each other, the strength and weaknesses of
each other and a greater sense of community
 so it also encourages the alternative forms of assessment
 and then encourages innovation in both teaching and student involvement (the first
way if you are going to facilitate or implement learners and their teaching you have
to be innovative no, you have to think of or you have to develop different activities
you have to develop different assessment tool for you to be able to implement this,

Slide 21

so in this slide, you can see here the differences between the learner centered teaching
and the teacher centered teaching, okay. So, with the elements given like knowledge,
student participation, the role of the teacher, assessment, emphasis, assessment and
academic culture.

Slide 22
so as you can see here, in the down on the left is the teacher-centered teaching look at
that knowledge, experience gained by the teacher and passed on to the students
meanwhile, the knowledge the experience and the beliefs are intertwined, they are in
collaboration between the teacher and the students, students to students ---- individual
and collaborating students.

And that is all for the introduction, Now let us welcome Ms. Jade H. Lacerna and
Heartlyn Palaya to discuss the Learner-Centered Teaching Approaches.
