DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF ABRASIVE BELT GRINDING

ATTACHMENT FOR LATHE


SYNOPSIS

Our project Design and Fabrication of abrasive belt grinding attachment for
lathe is used to polishing the circumference of large diameter drums (say
250 mm) used in textile industry. In order to prove lathe is a versatile
machine this operation is performed in lathe itself

This attachment having a main shaft and lay shaft. Abrasive belt rolls over
the main shaft and lay shaft .this main shaft gets the power from the motor to
run the belt. Here this arrangement is totally fixed over the compound slide
of the late after removing tool post. Now the drum (job) is hold between the
centers and belt is belt is feed against the job at 2000rpm. So glass finished
will obtain over the job.In this project job is held between the lives and dead
center. And grinding attachment is fixed over the compound slide. The feed
is given by movement of carriage and depth of cut is given by movement of
cross slide Grinding Wheel is run by a Separate motor at 3500 Rpm. We can
obtain the surface finish up to 4 deltas.

INTRODUCTION
Surface grinding is a widely used process of machining in which a spinning
wheel covered in rough particles cuts chips of metallic or non metallic
substance making them flat or smooth.
Process

Spark out is a term used when precision values are sought and literally
means "until the sparks are out (no more)". It involves passing the workpiece
under the wheel, without resetting the depth of cut, more than once and
generally multiple times. This ensures that any inconsistencies in the
machine or workpiece are eliminated.As with any grinding operation, the
condition of the wheel is extremely important. Diamond dressers are used to
maintain the condition of the wheel, these may be table mounted or as the
first image shows, mounted in the wheel head where they can be readily
applied.

WORKING PRINCIPLES

When motor is switched on power will transmit


from motor to grinding beltl. This type cutter machine is generally used for
cutting purpose light duty material. First fix the job rigidly on the special
vice. After that the motor is switched on and setted specified speed. The
hinged edge handle is gradually come to the down ward position then gently
pressed on the job. Enormous friction induced between grinding wheel and
job during that time a lot spark produced between the the rubbing area. Now
the job is gently cut from the parent structure.

ADVANTAGES:
1. Production time is minimized through cutting process is
very quickly.
2. No need of purchase special vice machine for cutting
process.
3. Taper also performed through proper fixture.
4. It is mainly very useful to cut the lengthy circular
rod ,square pipe in particular position.
5. Its operated and maintenance is simple.
6. It is compact and portable.
7. It can be efficiently used.
8. It is simple and rigid in construction.
9. Machining cost in lesser than other vice.

DISADVANTAGE:

1. Little vibration occurs due to high speed.


2. In order to avoid vibration specified bed is used.
APPLICATION:
This setup is mainly used in production field for cutting the
cylindrical rod firmly and securely to perform operations such as
grinding and various process .
