RECAP

In your English class you have studied about parallel structure.

Parallel structure means using the same pattern to show that two or more
ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase
or clause level.
In today’s lesson, we are going to determine parallel structures in
sentences with aspects of verbs.

6
LESSON

Parallel Structure with Aspects of Verbs

Parallel structure provides smooth flow in a sentence. It keeps your
writing balanced and makes it easier to read. It also shows that ideas are of
equal importance. Errors in parallel structure errors can make your writing
sound strange to listeners. Keep in mind that parallel structure should be
used when it comes to verb tense. Your verb tenses should always match.
Reading Text: “King Arthur”

Long, long ago there lived a famous king. His name was Arthur and he
was the king of the Britons. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table
encountered a lot of experiences, travelled many places, and fought many
battles. Arthur lost a lot of his knights but usually won the battles. Arthur’s
last battle was at Camian. The battle went on all day long and in the evening
everything got quiet. King Arthur was badly wounded and the only one of his
knights survived.
After the battle, Sir Bedivere helped the wounded King, and took him to
the island of Avalon. The King knew the lake well and remembered receiving
his magic sword, Excalibur, from the Lady of the Lake when he was a young
man. King Arthur fell to the ground and said to Bedivere: “Now, the time has
come! Take Excalibur, go to the lake and throw it into the water”.
Sir Bedivere took the sword, went to the lake, stood on the shore, and
looked at the Excalibur. The light fell on the sword and the knight saw how
beautiful the sword was. So, he hid it and returned to the king.

“Have you done it”? asked the King. “Yes, Your Majesty’, said Sir
Bedivere. The king smiled. “Tell me,” he said. “What did you see?” “I heard the
wind and saw the waters of the lake”. The king stopped smiling, “You didn’t
throw the sword in the lake,” he said. “Go back and do it,” said King Arthur.
Sir Bedivere ran to the lake, took the sword, closed his eyes, and throw
the sword far away. The next moment an arm in white rose out of the water,
caught the sword, raised it three times and then drew it under the water.
Later Sir Bedivere took Arthur to the lake where they saw a big black boat. In
the boat, there was three beautiful ladies with gold crowns.
They came to take King Arthur away, Sir Bedivere did not know where.
The queens put Arthur into the boat. “The Round Table and I do our work,
farewell” said King Arthur.

7
Then the boat moved slowly away. Sir Bedivere watched it until it
disappeared.

Parallelism is so important to the smooth flow of ideas. The following

example shows parallel structure with verb forms:
● Sir Bedivere took [past tense verb] the sword, went [past tense verb] to the
lake, stood [past tense verb] on the shore, and looked [past tense verb] at
the Excalibur.

o If we had not taken care to construct parallel verbs, we might have

said, “Sir Bedivere took [past tense verb] the sword, goes [present
tense verb] to the lake , he is standing [progressive form] on the
shore, and looks [present tense verb] at the Excalibur”.

Discussion/Modelling 1- Regular Verbs

Example of Parallel Structures with Regular Verbs

● The king smiles at his knight, looks at him closely and delivers his final
words.
o This sentence has a parallel structure with verbs- “smiles”, “looks”
and “delivers”- which are in simple present tense.

● King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table encountered a lot of
experiences and travelled many places.
o This sentence has a parallel structure with verbs- “encountered”,
and “travelled”- which are in simple past tense.

Discussion/Modelling 2- Irregular Verbs

Example of Parallel Structures with Irregular Verbs

● You take Excalibur, go to the lake, and throw it into the water.
o This sentence has a parallel structure with verbs- “take”, “go” and
“throw”- which are in simple present tense.

● An arm in white rose out of the water, caught the sword, and then drew
it under the water.
o This sentence also has a parallel structure with verbs- “rose”,
“caught”, and “drew”- which are in simple past tense.

a. Bedivere is taking Excalibur, goes to the lake and threw it into the
