LESSON

Fact is something that has taken place or known to have existed, which can
be validated with pieces of evidence.

A Fact:
• can be proven true or false through objective evidence;
• relies on denotative language; and
• frequently uses measurable or verifiable numbers, statistics, dates and
measurements.

Let’s take these examples. Look closely to the underlined word in each
sentence. These are the commonly used words to state facts.

1. The report confirms the high risk of virus in enclosed space.

2. Scientists have recently discovered the vaccines for COVID-19.
3. According to the results of the tests, she is negative to the virus.
4. The investigation demonstrated that rapid-testing is effective.

Opinion is defined as the personal view or judgment about a subject, that

may or may not be substantiated by the facts or positive knowledge. In other words,
an opinion is an inconclusive statement, used in subjective matters, which cannot
be proved true or false.

An Opinion:
• cannot be presently verified;
• relies on connotative language;
• can mean different things to different people; and
• uses value judgment words and comparisons such as “best,” “most,”
etc.

Let’s have some examples of Opinion. As you can see these underlined words
shows uncertainty in statements.
