SO 1100 (Principles of Soil Science Laboratory)

This Lab report is divided into three parts. The first part is the result A where
hydrometer method is a method done in a laboratory that can determine the soil
texture. In the result A we do the hydrometer method where there are given data and
you are going to compute temperature correction factor in first reading and the CHR
at 40 secs. Next is you will compute again the temperature correction factor in the
second reading and the CHR at 2 hours. Both of the answer in correction factor will
be used in computing the CHR. The result in CHR will be used in computing the
percentage of the clay, silt and sand. After you compute each of the percentage you
can now locate the textural triangle from the USDA textural triangle. The second part
is the result B where I watched the Mason jar soil test and collect all the data—
measurements and percentage. All of that are needed in finding the textural
classification. The last part is executed on our own backyard by feel and roll method
wherein the feel method is you will feel the sand between your thumb and forefinger
to determine the soil texture and in the roll method you need to moist the sand in
your palm and shaped it into a ball and you will determine the textural class based
on the criteria given. There are many ways to know the textural class in any place
you want it to execute just know the process and the information to have a factual
results.
CONCLUSION
By the end of the activity, it only proves that we can determine the textural
class of the soil in different Methods—it can be In the lab or on the field with the use
of many tools or equipment which is the feel and roll method and in the laboratory
which is the hydrometer analysis and the Mason jar. Each of the methods have
accurate results, but different procedure that will see the different principles in the
particle size distribution of each soil. To deeply understand the significance of the soil
to the growth and development of the crop. By knowing each of the methods we can
execute the work easily and choose different method according to the availability of
the materials.
