Education during the Pre-Colonial Period

 Education was informal and Unstructured decentralized

- No established formal schooling
- No formal preparation for teachers too
- so there was no established formal schooling and that there was no formal preparation for
teachers too.
so there were no schools and there were no teachers at the same time, so their teachers
were their

 Parents or Tribal tutors – (served as teachers at home)

- or what they call the babaylan or the katalonan during that time.

 Children were given more vocational training, but less academic teaching was given to
them
- so dito ang pinag-aaralan lang naman nila during that particular period ay livelihood at
household chores na kung saan, fathers taught their sons how to look for food and other
means of livelihood and mothers taught their daughters to do the household chores.

( so during the pre-colonial period, people believed that “man should work to provide their
daily need” that’s why fathers before taught their son to look for food. And “women are
responsible to do household chores”)

 Essentially, this learning prepared their children to be exemplary husbands and spouse
in the future
- so ang purpose ng pag-aaral daw nila na ito is to prepare their children on how to become a
good husband and wives in the future.

So ulitin ko para mas maintindihan, so yun nga the education during the pre-colonial period ay walang
pormal na paaralan at wala ring pormal na preparation para sa mga guro at nung walang pormal na
eskwelahan at pormal na guro ang nagsilbing mga guro nila is their parent or tribal tutors or what they
call the babaylan or katalonan, so ito yung mga nagsilbing guro nila sa kanilang tahanan. At ang pinag-
aaralan lang naman nila during that particular time ay livelihood and household chores na kung saan
fathers taught their sons to look or hunt for food and find other sources of living for themselves. And
mothers taught their daughters to do household chores. And according to them ang purpose ng pag-
aaral daw nila na ito is to prepare their children on how to become a good husband and wives in the
future.
Education during the Spanish Era

The education was highly religious as well, because the Spaniards taught us about Christianity. There
were so many opportunities in schools that they not only taught religious songs but also the doctrines
and taught communion among the young. Their teachers were the Spanish missionaries, and during this
particular period, a free public education system was established through an educational degree in
1863, but the boys and girls at that time had separate schools; there were schools exclusively for boys,
and the same was true with the girls.
