A Practical Work Approach Lesson Plan in Science 6

I. OBJECTIVES
The learners demonstrate understanding of different techniques to separate mixtures – Magnetism and Hand Picking

II. REFERENCES
S6MT-Id-f-2

III. A.1. Review

What are the two types of mixtures?

The two types of mixtures are Homogeneous and
Heterogeneous mixtures
What are the examples of homogeneous
mixtures? saltwater, alcohol, soda

What are the examples of heterogeneous

mixtures?
halo-halo, pinakbet, fruit salad
A.2. Motivation

Class, what is this picture? What are the things

you can find in such place? Do you want to stay
in or near a place like this? What will you do
if you live near a dumpsite?

B.1 Statement of the problem

Class, do you think that you could have fixed
the puzzles if you hadn’t done what you
have done? pupils’ response

What could be that important thing you have

done before you were able to fix the puzzles?
separate the puzzle pieces
Teacher presents a picture of a mixture

Name the components of the mixture

pupils’ response
Now let us recall the other methods of separating
mixtures that we had studied recently
evaporation, distillation, decantation etc
Do you think any of the methods that you
mentioned are appropriate for separating the
components of the given mixture
B.2. Group Activity

Teacher provides set of mixtures with guide

questions to the assigned groups of the class.
Let us have an activity. I will give you set of
mixtures and you will separate their compo-
nents. Use all the means you can to separate
the components. If you think you need a
specific item to use, you may assign a member
to ask me personally to give you that specific
item you really need.
pupils perform the activity

B.3. Group Reporting

Teacher uses the tv screen to flash the guide

questions.
-What do you call your mixture A? B? C? D?
- What type of mixture is mixture A?...
- How do you prepare to separate the mixture given?
- What do you call the method you used to separate
the mixtures?
- Do you think you have done the right method? Was
it easy to separate the mixtures components?
- Explain and demonstrate your method pupils report

B.4 Lesson Proper

Describe the sizes of particles or components of

-dingdong mixed nuts,
-marbles and stones mixture.
small but big enough to be picked by the fingers
Describe the components of the
-staple wire punched paper mixture,
- thumb tacks pellet mixture
Staple wires and pellets were too small. There are
some metal components of the mixtures
When particles are large enough to be seen clearly
we can separate the components through the
use of our hands. This process is called hand
picking.

If one component of the mixture has magnetic

property, like iron and steel, we can use magnet
to separate them easily. Some metals like gold,
silver and aluminum can’t be magnetized. If
we involve the use of magnet in separating
components, we call this process magnetism.

B.5 Exercises

Now that you know hand picking method and

magnetism method, I’ll ask somebody to give
his own example of mixture. After giving his
example of mixture he should also identify if
the mixture given can be separated by hand
picking or magnetism.
pinakbet = hand picking
Jack&Jill mixed snacks = hand picking
needles and syringes = magnetism
hairpins and ribbons = magnetism
B.6. Generalization
When do you use hand picking?
We use hand picking if the components of
the mixture is big enough to be seen and picked
by hand and fingers.
When do you use magnetism?
We use magnetism if a component of the mixture
has magnetic property like magnetic metals.

B.7. Application

From the matters provided, create your pairs to form mixtures and identify what method of picking will you
use to separate the components you paired

pebbles salt iron peelings paper clips bottle caps diamonds nuts

B.8. Evaluation

Bring out a ½ sheet of paper and answer the following

Supply the missing words to complete the idea of hand picking and magnetism

When particles are ___________ enough to be ______________ clearly we can separate the ___________
through the use of our hands. This process is called ______________________

If one component of the mixture has _______________ property, like some metals, we can use _________
to _______________ them easily. Some metals like gold, silver and aluminum can’t be _____________. If
we involve the use of magnet in separating components, we call this process ______________ .

III. Assignment

Give five (5) other examples of magnetic metals and five (5) other examples of non-magnetic metals.
