Christmas in England is really fun. I like it when the weather is really cold because a snowy Christmas is so
magical. In December, the afternoons are dark, but the streets have bright decorations, and everybody puts
colorful lights in their windows.
We always buy a real Christmas tree, as tall as possible. It smells wonderful. We hang pretty decorations on
the tree: like shiny tinsel, round baubles, and twinkly lights. It is very exciting to see all the lovely presents
under the tree; misterious shapes, all wraped in beautiful paper and gold ribbon.
Father Chistmas is a holly fat man in a red suit with a long white beard. On Chistmas eve, he visits all the
houses in his magic sleigh and leaves presents for all the good boys and girls when they are fast asleep in

Basic punctuation in English
A. Read the next infromation and discuss it with a partner. Ask doubts to the teacher. (10 mins.)

Most of the punctuation marks are very similarly used in English with some slight changes in some cases.
However, using the commas in English is really important since many Mexicans do not really know how to use
them.

Commas are sometimes hard to learn because they are used differently than in other languages.

18
To understand some rules of grammar use, it may be useful to first remember what an independent clause is.
An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone as a sentence: it has a subject and a verb and is a
complete thought. For example:
I plan to quit smoking.
My doctor told me to quit smoking.

B. Grammar exercise. Underline the independent clauses in the following sentences: (10 mins.)

1. I plan to quit smoking because my doctor told me to.

2. She has a good job, yet she is always broke.
