What a day!
My brother John celebrated his birthday the last week. He was born on August 13th, in Lima,
Peru. Unfortunately, my grandfather died the same day when my brother was born. But it’s
not the only coincidence. While my brother was celebrating his first year, my father won the
lottery and became rich. When he was celebrating his second birthday, my older brother
crashed the car and was arrested by the police. Different things happen on August 13th.
Some of them are good and other ones not. I remember John finished the university the same
day of his birthday. When he was dancing in a party organized by his friend to celebrate his
birthday, he met Sonia who is going to be his wife the next year. Everybody believes the
wedding is going to be on August 13th. Unbelievable, the number of coincidence in John’s

An instant decision is one that we make based on current circumstances. When we must
make a fast choice, this is an instant decision. These are not our intentions for the future,

you two specials: chicken or pasta.

Linking sounds
In the phrase he asked, a small /y/ is added between the long e /i/ and short a

pausing between words.
A slight /w/ is added to link the oo sound /u/ to the short i /ɪ/ sound in the phrase
do it. Again, this allows both vowel sounds to be pronounced clearly.

1 Mass nouns: this is the opposite of count nouns. Mass nouns are also
called non-countable nouns, and they need to have “counters” to
quantify them.
ORGANIZATION
1 Clustering: are a type of non-linear graphic organizer that can help
to systematize the generation of ideas based upon a central topic.
Using this type of diagram, the student can more easily brainstorm a
theme, associate about an idea, or explore a new subject.

LOGICAL CONNECTOR
• My husband and I went to Costa Rica, for it was our five-year anniversary.
• The neighborhood had a memorial last weekend, for a family’s son had
passed away.
Using the word for like this, however, can sound a bit formal and
unnatural in spoken English. Instead, it’s better to use subordinating
conjunctions like because or since. Meanwhile, the word for can take
different usages as a preposition, not a conjunction.
For example:
• What are you doing for New Year’s?
• Is this gift for me or someone else?
• I’ve been living in Los Angeles for about six months.

because he has to finish his homework but the
dirty clothes are on the bed, his socks are under
the bed, the T-shirts are out of the drawers, the

PRONUNCIATION
Linking sounds
Continuous consonants are types of sounds in which air flows continuously through
a constricted area of the vocal tract. When pronouncing continuous consonants,
the air is never completely blocked by any part of the vocal tract.
To link from one continuous consonant into the same continuous consonant, the
linked consonant sound is extended, or pronounced for a slightly longer amount
of time than a normal, single sound. For example, /r/ is a continuous consonant.
When /r/ is linked into another /r/, it’s pronounced for more time than if it is linked
to a different sound.
Compare the phrase ‘more rice’ (linking /r/ to /r/) to the phrase ‘more ice’ (linking
/r/ to vowel sound). The /r/ of the phrase ‘more rice’ is said for a longer duration.
