MAGNETIC FIELD
𝑭 = 𝒒𝒗 × 𝑩

𝑭 = 𝒒𝒗𝑩 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝜽
where
F = force
q = charge
v = speed of charge
B = magnetic field
𝜽 = angle between v and B
MAGNETIC FLUX
Magnetic Flux through a surface
Φ = 𝐵 ⋅ 𝐴Ԧ
Φ = 𝐵𝐴 cos 𝜙
• The angle is between the B-field and the
normal to the surface.
• The magnetic flux is proportional to the
number of field lines that pass through a
surface.
• Any change in magnetic flux causes a current
to flow
SAMPLE PROBLEM
• A coil of wire of one turn has a cross-sectional area of 0.08 m2 . A magnetic
field of 0.4 T passes through the coil perpendicular to the plane of the coil.
What is the total magnetic flux through the coil?

• A coil of wire is situated in 0.5T uniform magnetic field. The area of the
coil is 2.0m2 . What is the magnetic flux if the angle between the
magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the coil is 600 ? After 5s,
the magnetic field is now parallel to the normal to the surface
MAGNETIC FIELD PROBLEMS
LAW OF REFLECTION
1. What is the incident ray from the point of
incidence? RAY OA
2. What is the reflected ray? Ray OA’
3. What is the angle of incidence? Ray AON

SAMPLE PROBLEM
Light traveling through an optical fiber (n=1.44)
reaches the end of the fiber and exits into air.
(a) If the angle of incidence on the end of the
fiber is 30o, what is the angle of refraction
outside the fiber?
