It may be defined as standards for measurement which is

accepted at a particular level.

The principle of units of measurements in architecture normally consists the
following

a) Single units work like doors, windows, trusses etc., are expressed in
numbers.
b)Works consisting of linear measurements involving length like cornice,
fencing, hand rail, bands of specified width etc., are expressed in running
metres
c)Works consisting of real surface measurements involving area like plastering,
white washing, partitions of specified thickness etc., and are expressed in
square meters
d)Works consisting of cubical contents which involve volume like earth
work, cement concrete, Masonry etc are expressed in Cubic metres.
Units used in Architecture

HECTARE

ACRE

KANAL

MARLA

SQ. YARD

SQ. METER

SQ. FEET
Relationship in the units

1 Hectare = 2.48 Acres

1 Acre = 8 Kanal = 4840 Sq Yard = 43560Sq.ft

1 Kanal =20 Marlas = 605 Sq Yard = 5445 Sq. ft

1 Marla= 30.25 Sq. Yard =272.251 Sq. ft

1 Sq. Yard = 9 Sq. ft = .836 Sq. metre

1 Yard = 3 ft

1 Yard = .91 metre

1 Sq. Meter =10.76 Sq. Feet (1metre = 3.28 ft)

Now The Question is:-

If I have to construct a house on a plot size of 100 sq. yards

then in which unit will I pay the contractor for the following
works????

Excavation
Foundation
Brickwork
Plastering
Doors and windows
Painting
Glass works etc.

Assignment

What is the importance of measuring units in Architecture?

How many Kanal makes one Acre?

How many Sq. Feet make a Sq. Yard?

In which units do we measure Earthworks and Plastering,

pointing and finishing?
