Indefinite article: Mạ o từ bấ t định <A/AN>
Cách dùng của từng loại mạo từ

1. Cách dùng mạo từ “A”

• Dù ng trướ c danh từ bắ t đầ u bằ ng phụ â m.

• Trướ c danh từ bắ t đầ u vớ i “uni”.

VD : a university.

• Dù ng trong cá c thà nh ngữ chỉ số lượ ng nhấ t định.

E.g: a lot of, a couple, v.v...

• Trướ c “half” khi nó theo sau mộ t đơn vị nguyên vẹn.

VD : Note: ½ kg = half a kilo

• Dù ng trướ c “half” khi nó đi vớ i mộ t danh từ tạ o thà nh danh từ ghép.

VD: E.g: a half-holiday, a half-block, v.v...

• Dù ng trướ c cá c tỉ số 1/n .

VD : E.g: a third(1/3), a quarter (1/4)

• Dù ng trong cá c thà nh ngữ chỉ giá cả , tố c độ .

VD : two times a day, ten dollars a kilo.

• Trướ c danh từ số ít đếm đượ c trong câ u cả m thá n.

VD : What a lovely girl!

• Đặ t trướ c Mr/Mrs/ Miss + Surname vớ i ngụ ý á m chỉ đâ y là ngườ i lạ mà mình khô ng

quen biết. VD : a Mr Poster (ngườ i đà n ô ng đượ c gọ i là Poster)

2. Cách dùng mạo từ “An”

• Trướ c mộ t danh từ số ít bắ t đầ u bằ ng 4 nguyên â m (e, o, a, i)

• Trướ c 2 bá n nguyên â m u,y.

• Trướ c cá c danh từ bắ t đầ u bằ ng â m “h” câ m. VD: an hour.

• Trướ c cá c danh từ viết tắ t đượ c đọ c như nguyên â m. VD : an SOS, an MV.

 Các trường hợp không dùng a/an

Trướ c danh từ khô ng đếm đượ c.

Ví dụ : My mother gave me good advice

Trướ c tên gọ i cá c bữ a ă n, trừ khi có tính từ đứ ng trướ c cá c tên gọ i đó . Ví dụ :

• I have dinner at 7 p.m

• You gave me an appetizing dinner

Tuy nhiên, nếu là bữa ăn đặc biệt nhân dịp nào đó, người ta vẫn dùng mạo từ bất
định. I was invited to breakfast (bữ a điểm tâ m bình thườ ng)

3. Cách dùng mạo từ The

 Dù ng mạ o từ xá c định “the” trong cá c trườ ng hợ p sau:

• Sự vật, sự việc kể đến hai lần

I live in an apartment. The apartment is very big.

My sister has two kids: a daughter and a son. The daughter is 15 years old and the son is 3
years old

• Chỉ các yếu tố duy nhất: the sun, the earth, the moon, the sea…

• Đứng trước tính từ:

The poor: nhữ ng ngườ i nghèo The young: nhữ ng ngườ i trẻ tuổ i

The old : nhữ ng ngườ i già The rich: nhữ ng ngườ i già u có

• Trước từ chỉ tên riêng

Ví dụ : the Nile, the Bach Dang hotel, the Mekong river, the Himalaya, the Buc Tuong….

• Chỉ quốc tịch: the Chinese , the Vietnamese, ……..

• Trước tên của tổ chức, nhiều bang: the United Nations, the United States the Asian.

 Mạo từ xác định “The” đề cập tới đối tượng mà người nói người nghe đều biết.

The + N chỉ đối tượng được coi là duy nhất.

VD: The mon, the sun, v.v....

The + từ chỉ thứ tự.

VD : the first, the last, v.v... .

The + Liên Bang, Hợp chúng quốc, quần đảo.

VD : the US, the UK, etc.

The + N chỉ chức vụ hay tước hiệu mà KHÔNG có tên riêng đi kèm.

VD : the Queen, the King, v.v... .

The + Adj chỉ tính cách đặc điểm khi nói tới nhóm người

E.g: the mean, the old, v.v....

The + Tên nhạc cụ.

VD : the piano, the guitar, etc.

The + N chỉ tên riêng của dãy núi, đại dương, hồ, sông… mà KHÔNG có N chỉ các đối
tượng đi kèm

VD: London is on the Themse.

The + N số ít khi nói đến cả một thể loại

VD :the rose = roses.

The + N chỉ phương hướng

VD: the West, the East, etc.

Dùng “the” trước các N chỉ địa điểm công cộng mà hành đọng đến đó không phải vì
mục đích chính

VD : I go to school to study Math subject ( Tô i đến trườ ng họ c toá n).

I go to the school to pick my girl friend up ( Tô i đến trườ ng để đó n bạ n gá i => hà nh độ ng

đó n bạ n gá i khô ng phả i mụ c đích toong thườ ng củ a việc tớ i trườ ng).

The + N chỉ ngôn ngữ = Dân tộc nói ngôn ngữ đó

E.g: the bristish = Ngườ i Anh

 Không dùng mạo từ bất định trong các trường hợp

a.Trước danh từ số nhiều.

- Lưu ý:  A/An khô ng có hình thứ c số nhiều.

Eg: Số nhiều của a dog là dogs 

b.Trước danh từ không đếm được

Eg: My mother gave me good advice.

c.Trước tên gọi các bữa ăn, trừ khi có tính từ đứng trước các tên gọi đó
Eg: I have dinner at 6 p.m 

Tuy nhiên, nếu là bữa ăn đặc biệt nhân dịp nào đó, người ta vẫn dùng mạo từ bất
định.
Eg: I was invited to breakfast (bữa điểm tâm bình thường)

MỘT SỐ LƯU Ý KHÁC

Zero article là mạ o từ rỗ ng, hay nó i cá ch khá c là khô ng dù ng mạ o từ xá c định hoặ c mạ o từ

bấ t định đi kèm cho danh từ .

1. Khi danh từ số nhiều được dùng trong câu phát biểu mang nghĩa chung chung.

- ø Cats don't like cold weather. (Loà i mèo nó i chung khô ng thích trờ i lạ nh)

- ø Beans are good for health.

- ø women are fighting for their rights.

- ø Doctors always support each other.

- ø Italians make delicious piza.

- ø Trees don't grow in the antarctic.

- ø Watches have become very accurate.

- ø Post offices close at 4 O'clock.

2. Danh từ không đếm được có thể không cần mạo từ.

Danh từ khô ng đếm đượ c khô ng thể đi cù ng vớ i Mạ o từ bấ t định (Indefinte articles), Tuy
nhiên ta có thể bỏ qua mạ o từ vớ i loạ i danh từ nà y

Life is ø short.

I like ø butter.

3. Không dùng mạo từ với danh từ riêng.

a. Zero Article + Tên người

- ø Fritz Webber lives in Berlin.

- The Fritz Webber I know lives in Berlin.

b. Zero article + Chức danh (Titles)

Trong tiếng anh, chú ng ta sử dụ ng cá c chứ c danh như Mr, Mrs, Ms, Miss, Dr, Darling, vâ n
vâ n để xưng hô trong cá c tình huố ng trang trọ ng để bà y tỏ sự tô n trọ ng hoặ c tình
thươngcủ a mình vớ i ngườ i khá c, khi sử dụ ng cá c chứ c danh nà y vớ i danh từ , ta khô ng cầ n
dù ng mạ o từ A/An hoặ c The

Mr and Mrs Jackson are here to see you.

Mr Smith, can you give me a hand?

4. Zero article + Các buổi của ngày và đêm.

At dawn;

Day break;

at sunset / sunrise.

at noon / midnight /night

at /by / after / until 8 O'clock.

Bây giờ ta so sách các trường hợp sau:

We left at ø dawn. ( Đề cậ p đến thờ i gian trong ngà y)

I've seen a dawn like it. (Đề cậ p đến mộ t buổ i bình minh nà o đó )

We've got up early to admire the dawn. (Đề cậ p đến mộ t buổ i bình minh cụ thể trong ngà y)

5. Zero article + Các bữa ăn như là breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner, supper.

We do not use articles before the names of meals. .

không dùng mạo từ đối với các danh từ là tên của bữa ăn

Come to have dinner with us.

Mother is cooking lunch.

Dinner is ready

Ngoại trừ:

Chú ng ta dù ng A khi có mộ t tính từ đừ ng trướ c breakfast, lunch, dinner etc.

I had a late dinner yesterday.

It is a very nice dinner.

Chú ng ta sử dụ ng THE trong trườ ng hợ p chú ng ta muố n nó i về mộ t bữ a ă n cụ thể nà o đó

(We use the when we are talking about a particular meal)

The dinner we had last night was enormous.

The lunch we had at the restaurant was very good

6. Zero article + Danh từ như là school / Hospital / college / University / work / sea /
bed / court / prison / market để diễn tả mục đích chính.

- We got to church (To pray Mụ c đích chính là để cầ u nguyện)

- We went toward to the church. (Church ta tò a nhà ta đang đi đến.)

- The sailor have done to sea (to work: Ra biển để là m việc)

- We are going to the sea next weekend. (Ra bờ biển)

- I met her at college.

7. Zero article + Danh từ chỉ phương tiện vận tải như là by bus / by train / by plane /
by car / on foot / on horse-back.

We travelled all over Europe by bus.

I came here on the local bus.

8. Zero article được dùng trong các phép diễn tả cố định khác.

- Hand in hand

- From top to toe;

- From top to bottom.

- with knife and fork.

- day by day; day after day...

9. Which what; such + Danh từ số nhiều (plural nouns).

What fools they are!

Young people enjoy such freedom nowadays.

10. Chúng ta không dùng mạo từ bất định hoặc mạo từ xác định đối với các danh từ
đã được bổ nghĩa bằng tính từ sở hữu.

- My car doesn't start. I guess it runs out of gasoline.

- His students work very hard in the exam.

11. Không dùng mạo từ trước danh từ chỉ tên ngôn ngữ

Can you speak English? (NOT Can you speak the English?)

They speak French at home.

Tips: Lý do ta không dùng mạo từ cho các trường hợp này vì tính từ sở hữu "my" và
"his" cũng thuộc lớp từ hạn định như mạo từ.
