A. A/An
1. Đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít không xác định, được người nói nhắc đến lần đầu tiên

VD: I bought a cat yesterday.

(Ta thấy “con mèo” trong trường hợp này lần đầu được nhắc đến và người nghe trước đó không biết đó là
con mèo nào nên ta sử dụng mạo từ không xác định.)

B. The

1. Đứng trước một danh từ xác định đã được nhắc ở phía trước (người nghe đã biết được đối
tượng mà người nói nhắc đến là gì)

Ví dụ: I bought a cat and a dog yesterday. The cat is white and the dog is black.

2. Đứng trước một danh từ mà sau danh từ đó có một mệnh đề hay cụm từ theo sau làm rõ nghĩa.

Ví dụ: I know the girl who is standing over there.

(Ta thấy mệnh đề quan hệ “who is standing over there” là mệnh đề theo sau để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ
“girl” nên ta sử dụng mạo từ “the” phía trước danh từ “girl”.)

The man with brown eyes is my husband.

(Ta thấy cụm từ “with brown eyes” là cụm từ theo sau để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ “man” nên trước “man”
ta cần sử dụng mạo từ “the”.)

3. Đứng trước các danh từ là chỉ người hoặc vật chỉ có DUY NHẤT.

Ví dụ: The Earth goes around the sun

Obama used to be the president of America.

4. Đứng trước một tính từ để chỉ một cộng đồng người.

Ví dụ: The deaf are not able to hear.

5. Đứng trước danh từ riêng chỉ HỌ ở dạng số nhiều để nói đến cả vợ chồng hay cả gia đình.

Ví dụ: The Browns are travelling in Vietnam now.

6. Sử dụng trong cấu trúc chỉ địa điểm, nơi chốn, hay phương hướng.

Giới từ + the + danh từ chỉ địa điểm, phương hướng

Ví dụ: I live in the North of Vietnam.

7. Sử dụng trước các danh từ chỉ nhạc cụ.

Ví dụ: My daughter is playing the piano.

8. Sử dụng trong cấu trúc so sánh hơn nhất.

 Ví dụ: Your sister is the most intelligent girl I’ve ever met.

9. Tên sông, biển, đại dương, dãy núi

Ví dụ: the Mekong River, the Pacific Ocean, the Himalayas.

III. Các trường hợp không sử dụng mạo từ “a/an/the”.

1. Với danh từ đếm được số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được mà được nói 1 cách chung
chung

Ví dụ: Passwords protect our personal information.

2. Với các danh từ riêng chỉ TÊN địa điểm như châu lục, quốc gia, thành phố, quận, đường,..

Ví dụ: Ha Noi is the capital of VietNam. VietNam is a country of Asia.

Ngoại lệ: dùng “the” với tên của 1 só quốc gia: the UK, the USA, the Netherlands, the Philippines, …

2. Với ngày, tháng, năm, các ngày lễ (Tet, Chrismas, Valentine,..)

Ví dụ: My son goes to school from Monday to Friday.

3.Với bữa ăn

Ví dụ: Breakfast is the most important meal in a day.

4. Với các môn thể thao, trò chơi

Ví dụ: I like playing badminton and football.

5. Với tên núi, hồ

Ví dụ: Lake Victoria, lake Than Tho , Mount Rushmore

Ngoại lệ: the Great Lake, the Mount of Olive,.…

6. Ngôn ngữ, tiếng nói

Ví dụ: English is being used everywhere.

7. Trước mùa ( summer, spring, winter, autumn)

8. Trong các cấu trúc:

- at night: vào ban đêm

- at school: ở trường học

- at home: ở nhà

- go to school/ go to market/ go to work: đi học/ đi chợ/ đi làm

EX1: Điền a an the thích hợp vào chỗ trống
