Lesson 3.1 Shapes of Distribution
Key Points:
1. Positively Skewed Distribution
-  a type of distribution in which most values are clustered around the left tail of the
distribution while the right tail of the distribution is longer. The mean, median and mode of
the distribution are positive rather than negative or zero i.e., data distribution occurs more on
the one side of the scale with long tail on the right side. It is also known as the right-skewed
distribution, where the mean is generally there to the right side of the median of the data.
- it has a positive skewness.

2. Symmetrical Distribution is one where splitting the data down the middle produces mirror
images. Bell curves are a commonly-cited example of symmetrical distributions.

Notes:

a) In statistics, skewness is a way to describe the symmetry of a distribution.

b)For symmetric distributions, the skewness is zero.
c) In a symmetrical distribution, the mean, mode and median are equal to each other.
3. Negatively Skewed Distribution - a negatively skewed (also known as left-skewed)
distribution is a type of distribution in which more values are concentrated on the right side
(tail) of the distribution graph while the left tail of the distribution graph is longer.
