Module 2 - Quadratic Functions

Lesson2.5.2 :Finding the Equation of a Quadratic Function Given Its Graph
Key Concepts:
The steps in deriving the quadratic function given the graph of a given function are:
1. Identify the coordinates of the vertex of the given parabola.
2. Choose one ordered pair from the graph.
3. Substitute or replace the coordinate of the vertex in the quadratic equation y = a ( x – h )² + k
to solve for a.
4. Substitute the result in the form f( x ) = a ( x – h )² + k .
Examples:
1. Find the equation of the quadratic function determined from the graph below.

Solution:
a) V = ( 2 , - 3 )
b) Choose one ordered pair from the graph. ( 5, 0 )
c) Substitute the coordinate of the vertex and the point chosen in the form
y = a ( x – h )²+ k to solve for a.
y = a ( x – h )²+ k
0 = a ( 5 – 2 )² + ( - 3 )
0 = a ( 3 )² – 3
0 = 9a – 3

2. Find the quadratic function f(x) whose graph has its vertex at ( -2 , 3 ) and contains the point
( 4 , 12 ).
Solution:
a) V = ( - 2 , 3 )
b) ( 4 , 12 )
y = a ( x – h )² + k
12 = a [ 4 – (-2 )]² + 3
12 = a ( 4 + 2 )² + 3
12 = a ( 6 )² + 3
12 = a ( 36 ) + 3
12 = 36 a + 3
12 – 3 = 36a
