Capstone Update #1

What I have accomplished so far (if nothing – WHY??)

I am excited to share that I have already visited The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy on February 25, 2023,
where I will be completing my volunteer internship. I had the opportunity to meet with one of the
pharmacists there and discuss the details of the internship. We went over my schedule, which will be
from 9 am to 5 pm each day during the first week of spring break, which is from March 13-17, 2023.

During the discussion, the pharmacist explained the limitations of having only a five-day internship, as it
may not fully allow me to grasp the in-depth knowledge of how pharmacy works. However, I am still
eager to take this opportunity and learn as much as I can during my time there. I am very grateful for the
chance to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, and I believe this internship will be a
valuable experience for me.

What I plan to accomplish by the end of the week

By the end of the week, I plan to have a conversation with my science teacher from last semester to ask
if she could be one of my mentors and I will also ask her for her help in forming questions that I can ask
the pharmacists during my upcoming internship. I believe that she can provide me with valuable insights
and advice that will enable me to ask insightful and relevant questions that will help me gain a deeper
understanding of the ethical challenges in pharmacy. With her guidance, I hope to be able to formulate
questions that will allow me to explore this topic more deeply and gain a better understanding of the
ethical considerations that are involved in the practice of pharmacy. Ultimately, I hope that this will help
me to become a more informed and thoughtful student, and to deepen my commitment to the study of
pharmacy and the pursuit of knowledge.

My needs (materials, time, space, mentor etc.)

My needs right now are focused on making sure I have the support and guidance necessary to succeed
in my future endeavors. To achieve this, I plan on reaching out to my former science teacher to see if
she would be willing to serve as a mentor for me.

Additionally, during my time at The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, I plan to ask one of the pharmacists if
they would be willing to act as a mentor to me as well. I believe having someone who has firsthand
experience in the field will be incredibly helpful in developing my skills and understanding of pharmacy.
Finally, I understand the importance of using my time wisely during spring break. I plan on spending
some of my free time organizing and preparing my capstone project. This will involve creating
informative and engaging PPT slides and organizing some information I gathered during my internship.

How I have interacted with my mentor recently and what I still need to do

So far, I have not had any recent interactions with my chosen mentor yet. I am currently in the process
of planning to reach out to my chosen mentors and initiate a conversation with them. While I have
identified potential mentors who I believe could provide valuable guidance and support in my academic
and professional journey, I recognize that it is important for me to take the initiative to reach out to
them and establish a relationship.

Challenges I encountered and how I have overcome them

Starting a new internship can be daunting, and I certainly felt nervous before meeting with the
pharmacist at The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy. I was worried that I wouldn’t do a good job once the
internship starts. However, I was determined to make the most of this opportunity, so I listened
attentively to the pharmacist's advice and asked questions to clarify any uncertainties I had.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was understanding the limitations of only having a five-day
volunteer internship. The pharmacist explained to me that there was only so much they could teach me
in such a short amount of time, but I was eager to learn as much as possible during my time there. I was
able to overcome this challenge by reading some pharmacy-related articles when we did the annotated
bibliography. It really helped me to understand the basics of pharmacy.

Overall, I found that the more I listened and asked questions, the more comfortable I became with the
pharmacist and the expectations for the internship. As the meeting went on, my nervousness subsided,
and I was able to focus on the opportunity to learn and grow through this experience. I’m excited for the
chance to apply what I learn during my time at The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy and to further my
understanding of the field of pharmacy.
