Omneon SystemManager is the system’s Network Management Server.

The SystemManager acts as the administrative hub of an Omneon
Spectrum media server installation.
Its streamlined and intuitive browser-based user interface allows users
to make rapid adjustments to system configurations, integrate
additional components and identify fault conditions.
The SystemManager's fault reporting and alerting capabilities can head
off issues before they become critical. It provides both facility wide
control, as well as active monitoring and alerting.

The SystemManager consists of the SystemManager application that

runs on the SystemManager Hardware Platform
The SystemManager application consist of :
−Background application that communicates with MediaDirectors over
Ethernet
−Web server that provides a user interface for configuring, monitoring
and upgrading MediaDirectors, MediaPorts and MediaStores.
The SystemManager Hardware Platform runs on Windows XP, Windows
Server 2003/2008, Windows 7.

Beginning from SystemManager v5.4 onwards, a license is required to

run SystemManager application
Licensing is via FlexLM
6 Key Services used by SystemManager PC for Omneon:
−Harmonic/FlexLM License Manager
−Harmonic SystemManager
−Portmap
−SNMP Service
−NTP services (optional)
−vDHCP services (optional)

SystemManager maintains a database file called “manager.oda” in

“D:\Omneon\manager\omdb\” folder
The database file contains the details of the hardware components
managed by the SystemManager as well as a copy of the Spectrum
configuration settings.

Two ways:
On SystemManager PC, launch Internet Explorer URL
−http://localhost or http://x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP address of
the SystemManager PC
On other Windows PC on the network, launch Internet Explorer URL
−http://x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the SystemManager
PC

An Omneon Player is a software object that lives in the MediaDirector

host
An Omneon Player can be configured with settings like:
−A unique name that represent its purpose (eg QC1, REC1)
−Play Only, Record Only, or Play & Record capabilities
−Default Clip folder
−Control Mechanism (Omnibus, VDCP, BVW etc)
−Wrapper format (QuickTime or MXF)
−Media Tracks
• Video essence type (MPEG, DV, HDCAM, DHxHD etc)
• Video bit rate (MPEG xMbps LGOP, IMX 30/40/50Mbps, DV25/DV50 etc)
• Audio attributes (no of channels, 16 or 24 bits)

To use a physical channel on a Mediaport, you need to:

−Create a player on the host in which the Mediaport is connected.
(Remember that each Player is associated with a specific host, and each
Player may only be associated to those Mediaports attached to that selected
host. A Player that resides on Host0 cannot be associated to a Mediaport that
resides on Host1)
−Define player settings
−Associate (“Attach Device”) physical I/O on Mediaport to the Control
Mechanism & Media Tracks define in the Player
−Activate the Player
−Control of the physical I/O port is via controlling the operation on
the Player

In a Omneon clip, there exist the following data stored in the wrapper:
−SOM = the first frame timecode of the clip (in HH:MM:SS:FF) stored
−First Frame = an absolute integer value (NOT timecode) pointing to
the first frame of media
−Last Frame = an absolute integer value pointing to the last frame of
media +1
−Default In = an integer value (NOT timecode) representing the Mark-
In point
−Default Out – an integer value representing the Mark-Out point + 1
In addition, every frame of media also has a timecode field
(HH:MM:SS:FF) stored with it.

Omneon Confidential Page 28

Harmonic Confidential

Players do not play clips — instead they play Timelines;

To play a clip, the clip needs to be “attach” to Timelines. After the clip
is played, the clip needs to be “detach” from Timeline
Unless explicitly specifying “Clip In” and “Clip Out” during the attach,
the clip is attached from “Default In” to “Default Out”
A PlayHead will move on Timeline restricted between MinPos and
MaxPos

Record TimeCode Source

−External: Source can either LTC or VITC as selected from the Attach
Devices screen for the Video Media Track

−Internal (TCG on): Timecode is obtained from MediaDirector’s TCG

Omneon Confidential Page 30

Harmonic Confidential

Playback TimeCode Source

−From Clip: Timecode is read frame-by-frame from the clip and
output using the Mediaport (“LTC only” or “LTC & VITC”)

−Internal (TCG on): Timecode is generated from MediaDirector’s TCG

Omneon Confidential Page 31

Harmonic Confidential

When Internal (TCG on) is selected for either “Record” or “Play”

Players, an additional set of options are available to configure
timecode generation. The timecode will be generated by the internal
TimeCode Generator (TCG) in the MediaDirector Host. Choices are:
−Hold: Maintain timecode at a constant value specified using the
Player API
−Free Run: Define a continuous increase in timecode starting from a
value specified using the Player API

Omneon Confidential Page 32

Harmonic Confidential

−Locked to Player Timeline: Timecode is generated based on the

timeline position. Typically, timecode will start from 00:00:00:00 and
will be continuous throughout the entire back-to-back clip sequence.

Omneon Confidential Page 33

Harmonic Confidential

−Locked to Clip’s First Timecode (undefined for Record Players): The

TCG is initialized at the beginning of each clip with the clip’s start
timecode value stored in the wrapper, offset by the difference
between the “clip in” value used when attaching the clip and the
first frame value of the clip. When the timeline position reaches the
next clip, the TCG again reinitializes to a value based on the clip’s
start timecode and how the clip was attached.

Omneon Confidential Page 34

−Locked to Clip Position: The TCG is initialized to a timecode value =

“clip in” integer value converted to HH:MM:SS:FF

As of Spectrum v4.7SR4 and SystemManager v5.6, choose among the

available player wrapper format:
−QuickTime Reference (this the default)
−QuickTime Self Contained
−MXF OP1a (Internal)
−MXF OP1b (External)
−MXF OP1a (Internal eVTR)
−MXF AS-02 (previously known as OP0TypeA (External))
Normally we designate /fs0/clip.dir as the clip directory in the
Spectrum File System

Omneon Confidential Page 36

Harmonic Confidential

Note the W328416 clip are having the mov, mpg (m2v) and wav files. The
essence files is located in the media.dir. Note that the mov file size is small
and the essence files file size is large.

Omneon Confidential Page 37

Harmonic Confidential

Note that there is no media.dir for the essence files. They are all in one file so
this 30 second clip is 232MB in size.

Audio scrub mode provides a higher quality audio output, helpful to

video editors and operators when jogging or shuttling through content.
Audio scrub mode is supported on the MDM-5501, MDM-5301, MDM-
5201, MDM-5321, and MDM-5221.
The audio scrub feature works for up to four channels of audio. When
scrub mode is enabled, regardless of how the audio tracks are grouped,
the first four channels are scrubbed and the remaining channels are
muted.
In order to configure a player with audio scrub, the attached
MediaDeck Module must first be set for Audio Scrub Mode. Note that in
order to enable the Audio Scrub feature, any players configured for
Proxy Record must first be deactivated due to bandwidth constraints.
The two modes cannot be configured at the same time.

you need to “Activate” the player which effectively sends the
command to the MediaDirector Host to create the player with the
settings you have defined.
