Lesson Plan

Science 8

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
 Identify the different colors of light after passing through a prism.
 Arrange the colors of visible light in terms of energy.
 Discuss the significance of colors in our lives.
 Draw a color wheel that represents the colors of light.
II. SUBJECT MATTER

Materials: Flashlight, big bowl, water, mirror, and paper
III. PROCEDURE
A. Routine
Prayer
Greetings
B. Review
The teacher will give a short review of the previous lesson.
C. Motivation
Show a picture and ask the following questions:

Q1. What have you seen in the picture?

Q2. Can you identify the colors of a rainbow?
Q3. Have you ever wondered how a rainbow is formed?
D. Activity Proper
Show a video demonstration of the activity conducted by the teacher and the
students will record their observation.

Activity Procedure:

1. Fill the big bowl with water almost to its rim.

2. Place the mirror with its part partially submerged into the water.
3. Hold the paper above the bowl with one hand and use the other hand to turn
on the flashlight into the submerged part of the mirror.
4. Adjust the position of the mirror until you see color bands on the paper.
E. Analysis
The students will be asked with the following questions:

Q1. What happens when the light hits the mirror?

Q2. Why is the prism or water able to separate the colors of white light?

Q3. How are rainbows formed in nature?

Q4. As a student, how do colors play important role in your life? How colors influence
you? Share your thoughts.

F. Abstraction
Light is a kind of energy that can travel through space in a form of
waves.
Dispersion is a kind of refraction which provided us colors of light. It is
observed when white light passes through a prism. Refraction is the bending of
light when it travels from one medium to another.
A prism is a transparent optical element with flat and polished surfaces
that disperses light.

Table 1. Range of Wavelength, Frequency, and Energy of Light

Color Wavelength Frequency Photon Energy

(nm) (THz) (eV)
Violet 380-445 675-789 2.80-3.26
Indigo 445-450 668-675 2.75-2.80
Blue 450-495 606-668 2.50-2.75
Green 495-570 526-606 2.17-2.50
Yellow 570-590 508-526 2.10-2.17
Orange 590-620 484-508 2.00-2.10
Red 620-750 400-484 1.65-2.00

The more the energy in the wave, the higher its frequency. The lower
the frequency is, the less energy in the wave.

G. Application
A. Label the dispersed colors of visible light in an increasing energy.

B. Study the table 1 and answer the following:

Q1. Which color has the highest frequency but has the shortest wavelength?
Q2. Which color has the lowest frequency but has the longest wavelength?
Q3. What did you observe about the corresponding energies from red to
violet?
