Do parents have different standards and

expectations from their sons than daughters?

Parents are the only beings in the world who have an unconditional love for their children and
want them to do well in every field of their lives. But, having more expectations from boys
than girls is something that was present since a long time.

Before the birth of Prophet (SAW), in Makkah, women were treated worse than animals.
There were no expectations or hopes from women. If a family gave birth to a son, his birth
would be celebrated while when a daughter was born, parents felt humiliated and insulted.
Some would even bury their daughters alive. But when Islam came, rights of women were
secured and women were respected.

Unfortunately gender equality is still not acquired to this day. Parents still have more
expectations from boys than that of girls and the major factor is that girls will get married and
move out while boys will take the task of continuing the family. Parents tend to spend more
on the education of boys and for girls, they are strict on them to provide protection.

These differences in behaviours may cause negative effects on the children i.e. if boys receive
more education, girls might feel a sense of inferiority while if only girls are protected, boys
might take the wrong path e.g. street fights, drugs etc.

So, in conclusion, parents do have different expectations from boys than girls but it would be
better if both genders are treated equally and having treated equally will avoid making them
insecure or inferior.
