Before we start let’s have a drill

-5 + 8 = 3
9–2=7
-7 – (-7) = 0
(-2) (-5) = 10
(5) (-3) = - 15

Let’s have problem.

going to use the addition

property. If we are going to
add 10 + 5 + 5, what are you
going to do the other side or
term?

Add 5 to other side

Good, but why?

To make the equation satisfy

itself to make equal to each
other.

So therefore, what will

happen?

It will become 10 + 5 + 5 = 15
+ 5, then simplify sir,

20 = 20 the equation satisfy

itself or equal to itself.

what property is 20 = 20?

Reflexive property sir!

Now how about in

subtraction property what are
you going to do?
Same sir, we are going to
subtract same number on
each side. To make them
equal to each other.

Let’s have an example.

2. 9 – 2 = 7

Let’s subtract it by 3
If we subtract 9 – 2 – 3? What
are you going to do to 7?

Subtract by 3, sir

Why?

If we are going to subtract the

one side, we must subtract
the other side with the same
value sir.

So, what is the answer?

9 – 2 – 3 = 7 – 3 simplify

4 = 4 now they are equal to

each other.

In multiplication property
what will you do?

Multiply with the same

number to both sides to have
an equal equation or to make
them equal to each other.

How about in division

property?

Let’s have an example

7x = 21

What are we going to do here?

Divide both side by 7 to get

the value of our x, then check
if both are equal.

7 x 21
=
7 7

x=3

replace or substitute the

Since you have the value of value of our x which is 3 then

your x? what are you going to multiply to check if they are

do? equal to each other.

7(3) = 21
21 = 21 they are equal to
each other now sir!

Very good!
Since, you already know how
to use the Property of
Equality we are now going to
D. Developing Mastery Solve Linear Equation in One
(Explain) 10 min Variable.
Solving Linear Equation in
One variable using Addition
Property.

Let’s have an example

Find x using Addition
Property of Equality
1. x +3=4

Now we have a variable in our

problem. What are we going
to do?
Find the value of our variable.

How are we going to find

the value of our x?

First is we need to cancel

our 3, how are we going to
do that? We must find a
value that if we add 3 will
become 0, like for example

In 4, what value do you

think we will add to make
it 0? - 4 sir!

How about 5?
-5 sir!
Now what value we are

going to add to 3 to make it

zero?
-3

In rules of addition property if

we add to one side what are
going to do on the other side?

Add the same value in the

other side sir!

x+3= 4
+ -3 = -3 bring down x
_____________________________
x = 1

The value of our x is 1

Let’s check if they are already
equal to each other

1+3=4

1+3 = ?

So therefore 4 = 4, they are 4

equal to each other.

Example 2
Find y using Addition
Property of Equality
2. y – 7 = 13

Again, what are we going to

do?
Find the value of y

To find the value of y, what

are you going to do?
First find a value to make -7
become 0, that’s 7

Then add both sides by 7

Y - 7 = 13
+ 7 = 7
_____________________________

Then simplify, what is the

answer?
Y = 20
And then what are you going
to do if they are really equal
to each other?

Check if they are equal to

each other by substituting
value of y

20 – 7 = 13
13 = 13 they are equal to
each other.
Very good!

Next one is Solving Linear

Equation using Subtracting
Property of Equality.

Let’s have an example.

Find the value of x using
Subtracting Property of
Equality
3. x + 5 = 7

Again, let’s think of a value to

make +5 become 0, what
value do you think we can
subtract to +5 to make it 0?

-5 sir
Remember what you subtract
on one side you have to
subtract the same value to
the other side.

Let’s solve

x + 5 = 7 subtract by -5

- -5 -5
_____________________________
x = 2
Now how are you going to
check?

substitute the answer value

of x then simplify

2+5=7
7 = 7 they are now equal to
each other.
Let’s have another example
Find y using Subtracting
Property of Equality

4. 5 + y = 20

First, we are going to find the

value of our y.

In finding the value of y, we

must find a value to subtract
to make 5 zero.

5 + y = 20
- -5 -5
____________________________

The answer is?

y = 15 sir
Then let’s check if they are
equal to each other.

5 + 15 = 20
20 = 20
Now they are equal to each
other.

Now let’s use Multiplication

Property of Equality

Property of Equality

5. 3x = 15

In this problem first we are

going to find the value of our
x. how are we going to find
the value of x?

Any idea?

Now to find the value of x we

need to find the reciprocal of None, sir
1
3x and that’s if we multiply
3
by its reciprocal, the value
will be 1. Then what we
multiply on 3x is the same
thing we will multiply to 15

( ¿
1
3 ( )
3x
1
15 1
=( )
1 3

3 x 15
= = =x=5
3 3

Now we have the value of our

x, now let’s check if they are
equal to each other
(3)(5) = 15
15 = 15 they are equal to
each other.

But first what is reciprocal?

Reciprocal for any number ‘a’,
1
if the given number is
a
multiplied its reciprocal, the
value is 1.

1
Ex. 1. 4 is
4
1 Yes, sir!
2. 5 is

Are we clear here?

But there is a short cut to

that, to find the value of x is
we need to apply the inverse
operation, the inverse
operation of multiplication is
division.

Let’s divide them with the

value of 3

3 x 15
= x=5
3 3
Yes, sir

The value of x is 5, did we get

the same value of x?

Let’s check if they are equal

to each other using inverse
operation. The inverse
operation of division is
multiplication

(3)(5) = 15
15 = 15 they are equal to
each other.

Let’s have another example

Find x using multiplication
property of equality

6. 7x = 21

First, we need to find the

reciprocal of 7x, and what is 1
, sir
that base on the formula of 7
the reciprocal?

Very good now let’s multiply

1
each side by
7
By applying the
Multiplication Property rule if

( 71x )( 71 )=( 211 )( 71 )

multiply on this side we must
multiply the other side using
the same value.
7 x 21
What is the answer? =
7 7

Then we can apply the

inverse operation of
multiplication and that is? Division sir

What is the answer? x = 3, sir

Check if they are equal to

each other, what will you do? substitute the value of x and
that is 3 then multiply

(7)(3) = 21
21 = 21 they are equal to
each other sir

Now let’s try the short cut if

we are going to get the same
answer.

7x = 21, what are we going to

do? Divide each term by 7.

Why? Because the inverse operation

of multiplication is division

7 x 21
=
What is the answer? 7 7

x = 3, we get the same value

of x
Very good!
