BUILDING STONE QUARRY PROJECT IN SERENJE DISTRICT
Introduction
The stone quarry is situated at Serenje turn off, an area of 3ha in Serenje District. The project
has been proposed by Serenje Town Council.
Project description
The scope of the project involves mining and production of quarry aggregates. The proposed
project has building stone outcrop throughout the area. The annual production of stone quarry
is estimated at the capacity of 10, 000 MTA. Under reclamation it is anticipated to undertake
afforestation in the applied area and at the end of the mine about 200 trees will be grown in
the area.
Project Location
The proposed quarry project is located in Serenje District of Central Province 3.5km to the east of
Serenje CBD and approximately 70m from Mkushi- Serenje road in Chief Kabamba’s area.
The proposed project site for the establishment a quarry plant is located 150m from dwellings
south west and 1km east.
The coordinates describing the extent and boundaries of the project area are indicated in the
table below.

Objectives,
The objective of Serenje Town Council’s quarry activity is to ensure that the Local Authority
becomes economically reliant in its operations and also to provide affordable quarry
aggregate to constructors in the district.
Therefore, the Council has identified the environmental impacts in relation to the project as
well as how the impacts shall be mitigated.
Mining methods and Technology
The proposed methods of mining will be semi mechanized open casting mining. Drilling and
blasting as well as crushing of the rock aggregates shall be involved.
The mining will be done with the help of tools such as
➢ Drilling machines,
➢ Jack hammer,
➢ Compressor
➢ Excavators
Alternative Site
No alternative site is considered due to the location of the other rock outcrop which are
surrounded by settlements.
Investment Cost,
The total project investment cost is K2, 000, 000 (Two Million Kwacha).
Justification of the Project
The need for the project emanates from the obligation that Councils need to be self-reliant by
investing in such projects. In addition, there is an enormous demand for quarry aggregates for
construction works in Serenje District and the neighbouring Chitambo District.
Major Impacts,
The proposed project will have both positive and negative environmental and socio-economic
impacts.

Dust emissions
Noise pollution
Occupational health and safety risks.
Environmental Management Commitments,
Dust emissions- the crushing plant shall be provided with water suppression system to ensure
that dust does not affect other areas.
Noise pollution- the Council shall engage mines safety and contact suppliers who have the
expertise and experience in designing explosives with least vibrations.
Occupational health and safety risks - the Council has the Public Health unit that shall ensure
that all occupational health and safety measures are in place.
