1. Introduction

Trip purpose was to do MeOH commissioning to existing commissioned burner.

Valmet has sold new Dual Fuel Lance and MeOH valve rack. Existing fuels with
burner are Heavy Fuel Oil & Natural gas as support fuel. Burner has also CNCG
Lance.

Erection has been made by Customer with Valmet Chile supervision.

Burner head and refractory has been inspected by Valmet Chile during Erection
phase.

Burner has been commissioned earlier at 2018.

2. Installation / Cold Commissioning

Tuesday 04.05.2021, 08:45 – 19:00

• Travelling from i loca area to Arauco

• First entry to the plant, minor problems with gate and permissions.
• Meeting with client
o Discussed about burner status and Valmet´s action plan
o Burner location check
▪ Installations has been finished
▪ Asked about new Methanol lines are they cleaned?
• Customer was not sure and will check it.
• Washing´s going on at the boiler, no permit to start installation inspection.
• Program contractor is 3rd party company and will be working remotely.
• Client estimate about boiler start up is Saturday 08.05.2021

• Plant had protest and gate access was blocked which caused Traffic Jam
at the highway. Drive to plant took around 1h – 1,5h.
• Had a small status meeting with Araucos Ricardo Barrientos.
o Boiler washing´s still going on, customer informed that maybe
tomorrow is possible to go check burner installations.
• Office work for today.
• After 12:00 PM I got message that there is possible go to boiler house.
o We started installation inspection
• During installation inspection we founded some differency comparing PID:
o Physically we have atomization by-pass valve for keeping nozzle
clean during Oil firing. We didn’t find this instrument from Valmet
pictures (electrical, nor instrument catalog or PID). Contacted to
Burner Division to clarify this. Hopefully answer comes tomorrow.
o From customer scope, there is missing temperature measurement
TI-1827
o From customer scope, there is missing limit switch from ZS-1814
with close limit. Currently works as manual valve.
▪ This is safety interlock, this needs to be discussed how to
handle.
o Tag number 252-HSV-1819 solenoid valve for condensate valve
operation is removed from the valve rack and limit switch cables
are not connected to Valmet´s LCP. Current position is cabled
straight from field to DCS. Information came from customer during
installation checking.
o Methanol control valve looks suspicious, don’t know how it works or
controls flow.
o Flame scanner eye was dirty
o Visually installations look ok
• After inspection we started flushing of MeOH lines with instrument air. It
continues tomorrow.
o Opened instrument air filter and let air through.
▪ Small particles was flying from the piping
• Agreed with customer that after flushing we do signal tests for
components and after that sequence simulation.
• Hopefully tomorrow we can continue working at the boiler house.
Customer will inform Valmet about this matter.

Thursday 06.05.2021, 07:45 – 15:45

• Came to the site, customer informed that it is not possible go to boiler

house today. Maybe tomorrow.
• Got information from Burner Division about MeOH atomization by-pass
valve for keeping nozzle clear. It seems there has been a mistake
during designing phase and nobody has been noticing it until now. We

need to cable it, need some more information because program has
done little bit different way.
o Informed customer about changes
• Send MeOH burner interlock list to customer
• Office works mainly whole day

Friday 07.05.2021, 07:45 – 16:15

• Plan was to start signal testing at the boiler on 9:00 AM.

o Went to visit Arauco´s Ricardo Barrientos
▪ He informed that maybe afternoon is possible to start IO
and functionality testing.
▪ Customer informed that boiler start-up is scheduled on
Sunday.
▪ Waiting at the Valmet´s Container and looking project
information.
• End of the day, there was no permit to entry boiler house. Got informed
at the end of the day that tomorrow 8AM we are able to work and get
access to the boiler house.
