1 Bending Flexure for Rectangle Section: ARSC 433-ARCH41S8 - Steel and Timber Design

3.1.1 Bending Flexure for Rectangle

Section

Bending flexure is a stress caused by a bending moment.

The unit measure is the forced applied per unit area

The unit is in N/m2 (Pascal) or N/mm2 (Mpascal)

Fb = =

Where:

Fb = Bending Flexure

M = maximum bending moment

C = centroid of the cross section

Y = Arbitrary point at the y axis (depth of the effective depth)

I = Moment of inertia

Sample problem:

A rectangular steel bar, with breadth (b) of 50 mm, and an effective depth (d) of 100 mm, and 4
m long, is simply supported at its ends. If the density of steel is 7850 kg/m3, determine the
maximum bending stress caused by the weight of the bar.

Wgt. = (7850 kg/m3) (0.05m x 0.1m) (4m)

Wgt. = 157 kg

W = (7850 kg/m3) (0.05m x 0.1m) = 39.25 kg/m

W = (39.25 kg/m) (9.81m/s2)

W = 385.04 N/m

RAY =  =

RAY = 770.08 N

RBY = =

RBY = 770.08 N

For simply supported beam subjected to uniformly distributed load, the maximum moment will occur
at the mid-span.

At mid-span:

M= =    = 770.08 N.m

= =  = 4,166,666.67 mm2 or 4.17 x 106 mm4

C= =  = 50 mm

Fb = = =

Fb = 9.23 or 9.23 Mpa.       answer
