TYPES OF JOINT SEALING MATERIALS (BASED ON CHEMISTRY)

• Organic, which consist of a carbon- • Inorganic, which consist of a noncarbon-

based polymer based polymer
(-C-C-O-C-C-) (-Si-O-Si-O-Si-)
– Single-component and – Silicone
multicomponent polyurethane
– Polysulfide
– Acrylic
– Modified silicone

DOW CONFIDENTIAL - Do not share without permission 9

WHY IS SEALANT CHEMISTRY IMPORTANT?
• UV light will degrade the carbon- Si-O 452 KJ/mol
carbon or carbon-oxygen bond of
an organic sealant C-O 357 KJ/mol
• There is not enough energy in
ultraviolet (UV) light to degrade UV±400 KJ/mol
the Si-O bond of a silicone
sealant
• Therefore, an organic sealant will
degrade in sunlight and a
silicone sealant will be
virtually unaffected

SEALANT APPLICATION CONSIDERATION: CURE REQ’T

▪ 1 part ▪ 2 parts
▪ One component (795, 995, 791, 991) ▪ Two components (983, 982, 121)
▪ Factors affecting curing rate of 1-part product: Joint • 2 part products have chemical curing. Curing starts
Depth Temperature and Humidity once the base and the C/A are mixed.
• Spacers and backer rods. • Can fully cure deep section joints.
• Full adhesion is typically achieved fully within 1-3 days
• Deep section sealant must be given enough time to
release by-products during time to avoid reversion

PRINT REVIEW: DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Structural Glazing
•Dimensions
• Sealant Bite = 6mm or computed value considering loads,
whichever is higher
• Glueline = 6mm or computed value considering thermal dilatation,
whichever is higher
• The bite to thickness ratio should be between 1:1 and 3:1
GLUELINE
•Other Aspects
BITE
• For 1 part SG sealant, maximum of 15mm bite. If the bite is more
than 15mm, one must use open cell spacer tape.
• L-joints → Monolithic Glass = Ok!
• L-joints → IGU= Not Ok! (use Split Joint)

in a cleaning solvent.
• The Cloth is used to vigorously rub the paint surface.
• The solvent lifts the waxes, dirt and oil from the surface and suspends
them in solution.
