THREE TYPES OF STRESS

➢causes rocks to fold

or fracture. It
squeezes rocks
together
➢ is the most common
type of stress in
convergent plate
boundaries

THREE TYPES OF STRESS COMPRESSION

(1)Compression, (2) Tension, and (3) Shearing

➢causes rocks to be
pulled apart that
result to lengthening
and break apart
➢this type of stress
can be found at
divergent plate
boundaries

THREE TYPES OF STRESS TENSION

(1)Compression, (2) Tension, and (3) Shearing

➢happens when forces
slide pass each other in
opposite direction which
results to slippage and
translation
➢This is the most common
stress found in transform
plate boundaries

THREE TYPES OF STRESS SHEAR

(1)Compression, (2) Tension, and (3) Shearing

WHAT IS A GEOLOGIC FOLD?
A geologic fold is defined as a bend in rock due to
compressional forces.
THREE TYPES OF FOLDS

(1)Monocline, (2) Anticline, and (3) Syncline

THREE TYPES OF FOLDS MONOCLINE
A simple bend in the rock layers so that they are
no longer horizontal
GEOLOGYPICS.COM

THREE TYPES OF FOLDS MONOCLINE

A simple bend in the rock layers where the oldest rocks are at
the bottom and the youngest are at the top
THREE TYPES OF FOLDS ANTICLINE

A fold that arches upward.

THREE TYPES OF FOLDS ANTICLINE

A fold that arches upward where the oldest rocks are found at
the center of an anticline
THREE TYPES OF FOLDS SYNCLINE

A fold that bends downward.

THREE TYPES OF FOLDS SYNCLINE

A fold that bends downward which rocks are curved down to a

center
WHAT IS A FAULT?
A fault is a fracture or zone of fractures
between two blocks of rocks.
WHAT IS A FAULT?
The fracture is called a joint because there is a block of rock left standing on
either side of a fracture line. The footwall is the rock that place on top the
fault, while the hanging wall is below the fault.
THREE TYPES OF FAULTS

(1)Normal Fault, (2) Reverse Fault, and (3) Strike-slip Fault

THREE TYPES OF FAULTS NORMAL FAULT
Occurs when the crust is being pulled apart.
The hanging wall moves down with respect to the foot-wall.

THREE TYPES OF FAULTS NORMAL FAULT

Are the most common faults at divergent boundaries. In relation to the
footwall, it develops as the hanging wall drops down. East African Rift is one
of the examples of this type of fault.
THREE TYPES OF FAULTS REVERSE FAULT
Occurs when the crust is being compressed.
The hanging wall moves up over the foot-wall.

THREE TYPES OF FAULTS REVERSE FAULT

This type of fault is most common at the convergent boundaries. It creates
the world’s highest mountain ranges such as Himalayas Mountains and
Rocky Mountains.
THREE TYPES OF FAULTS STRIKE-SLIP FAULT
Occurs when two blocks slide past one another
parallel to the strike.

THREE TYPES OF FAULTS STRIKE-SLIP FAULT

It can be either right lateral or left lateral. It is mostly common on transform
plate boundaries. The most popular example of this type is San Andreas
Fault.
