Lesson: THE ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MIMAROPA

Objective/s:
1. Identify the distinctive characteristics of the arts and crafts of MIMAROPA.
2.Appreciate the artifacts by creating an artwork showing the
characteristics and elements of arts in MIMAROPA.

Concept: MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and


Palawan) is called the Southern Tagalog Region of the Philippines. It is
designated as Region IV-B. In this lesson, you will be familiar with the
different motifs from MIMAROPA that will be helpful in appreciating the
diversity of our culture.

ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MIMAROPA
1. MINDORO – There are eight native groups living in Mindoro which are Iraya,
Alangan, Tadyawan, Buhid, Hanunuo ("truly, real, genuine") and Ratagnon.

Ambahan – a rhythmic, poetic expression of the


Southern Mangyans with a meter of seven syllable
lines and having rhythmic end syllables.

- This is presented through recitation and chanting


without determined musical pitch or accompaniment.

- Its purpose is to express in a symbolic way a


situation or certain characteristics by the one reciting
the poem.

The Iraya Mangyans of Mindoro are fond of making


baskets made of dried nito grass and forest vines with
traditional designs and patterns of humans, animals,
trees and other objects. It is made of dried nito grass
and forest vines, meticulously and patiently woven to
create these very unique baskets.

2. MARINDUQUE – The Moriones Festival in


Marinduque is a much-awaited Lenten tradition
that is celebrated every Holy Week. “Morion”
means masks that are made from wood or
papier-mache, adorned with colorful shells,
animal hairs, tassels, and crepe papers.

With the use of buli (buri palm) and raffia,
weaving is a skill that has been passed on through
the years by the Marinduqueños.

3. ROMBLON – it is known not only for its fine marble


products but also for the beautifully woven mats
and bags out of rambling plants.

4. PALAWAN – it is known as the country’s last frontier. Tagbanuas are said to


be the first inhabitants of Palawan where they have their own writing system to
communicate with each other. Like the Hanunuo and Buhid Mangyans, they
use their writing system to write their own history.

Tingkop – is a cone shaped colander harvest basket


made of blackened and natural bamboo.

Tagbanua carvers are well known for their black wood sculptures of
animals with simple etched or incised features exposing the original white
grain of the wood.

Manunggul Jar is one of the most ancient
artifacts from the Philippines. The vessel is a
secondary burial jar that served as a container
for the exhumed remains of the deceased.

Activity 1

WOW FISHDA
Directions: Weaving is a skill that was developed and passed on from the generation
to generation in the provinces of MIMAROPA and the Visayan Islands. To interpret
this skill of weaving, this activity can be done with the use of any materials available
in your surroundings like old newspaper, magazine, art paper etc. by just following 3
easy steps.

Materials: 6 strips of paper (optional size- 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches long)

Directions:
1. Fold the strips of paper in the middle.
