CONCEPT PAPER 1

1. What is your proposed topic/title/study?

• DIY Fertilizer Using Sawdust, Orange Peel, and Human Urine

2. What is the reason why you want to pursue this topic/study?

There are many reasons to pursue this study. One reason is to create an environmentally-

friendly fertilizer using organic waste materials, such as sawdust and orange peels.

Human urine is also included, as it has similar chemical properties to chemical fertilizer.

These waste materials have lots of nutrients like nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

These minerals are also present in commercial fertilizers. In using these waste materials,

there will be a reduction of waste sent to landfills. This will also provide an alternative to

chemical fertilizers that are harmful to the environment.

The goal of this study is to provide an alternative to conventional fertilizers. Chemical

fertilizers can be expensive and may not be accessible to everyone. On the other hand,

this DIY fertilizer could be a cost-effective solution for people who want to grow their own

food or plants.

3. What theory supports your study?

• Crop production in most developing countries is faced with a lack of resources for

maximum production of which fertilizer is one. The use of human urine as well as it’s

mixture with compost are potential solutions to this problem. (O.O. AdeOluwa, O.

Cofie, 2012)

• Where human wastes such as urine can improve agricultural productivity,

independently of their microbial characteristics, they can contribute to the nutritional

status of the population, thus improving public health. (O.O. AdeOluwa, O. Cofie,

2012)

• Very recent study has showed that human urine has a high content of readily

available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and its fertilizing effect is reported to

be like that of nitrogen rich chemical fertilizer. (Karak, T., Bhattacharyya, P.,

2011)

• Generally, urine and compost-treated soils were better in nutrient status at the end

of the second planting. This increase in organic carbon might be associated with

the increase in microbial activities usually found in fields where organic fertilizers

are used.

• Although information on human urine application in different countries is very

scanty probably due to ethnical issues, the recent research of application of human

urine in sustainable agriculture clearly gives an idea that human urine could be

effectively used as an alternative of chemical fertilizers. The recent research

reveals that it is possible to use human urine as an alternative source of

multinutrient fertilizer, which could be achieved only by introducing new areas of

scientific research in research frontier.

• The results of the response of A. caudatus to urine and municipal waste composts

and their mixtures as fertilizer revealed that 100% urine performed better as a

fertilizer at both main and residual plantings.

Statement of the Problem

DIY fertilizer using waste materials such as sawdust, orange peel, and human urine.

The study aimed to recycle waste materials and help the environment.

It seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the positive implications of using waste materials in recycling?

2. Can this DIY fertilizer be a viable alternative to normal fertilizer?

3. What are the negative implications of using this alternative fertilizer?

4. How do you intend to go about the study?

• Research Design

This study utilizes the Causal-comparative/quasi-experimental approach to

test different variables and compare their results. The study will have pea

plants be as samples to test the DIY fertilizer. Three pea plants will be given

three different treatments. These treatments will have differing amounts of

orange peel, sawdust, and urine in it.

• Research Environment

This study is to be conducted outdoors in the home of a group 9 member in Tungkil,

Minglanilla, Cebu.

• Research Participants

The participants of this study will be people who do gardening as a recreational activity.

These individuals could be relatives, friends, or neighbors.

• Research Instruments

To gather accurate information on this study, the researchers will be using

surveys. The researchers will observe the plants that have differing

amounts of DIY fertilizer placed on it and compare them with each other

after two weeks.

• Data Gathering

To gather accurate information, the researchers will document their findings

daily. This means that the researchers will use landmarks of the plant, such

as the height, number of sprouted vegetables, and the number of leaves to

determine the amount of growth in two weeks.

• Data Analysis

The data analysis method this study will be using is Inferential Analysis.

This data analysis method allows the researchers to show relationships

between multiple variables to make a hypothesis.
