TEA

People from all over the world drink tea. It is a favourite hot drink, especially in
eastern countries such as China, India and Japan. The Chinese emperor,
Shang Nong, discovered tea about 4,500 years ago. He was in his garden
with a cup of boiled water when a few leaves from a tea plant blew into his
cup. The emperor tasted the "new drink", and liked it very much. Soon, it
became popular with his people and, later on, spread to other eastern
countries.

Tea arrived in Europe only 400 years ago. At first, it was very expensive and
only rich people could buy it. But importing tea to Europe helped to establish a
strong connection between the East and the West. As more and more tea was
imported, it became cheaper, and everybody could buy it.

An American, Thomas Sullivan, invented tea bags about 80 years ago. Until
the invention of tea bags, people put spoonfuls of tea leaves into a
teapot, and brewed it with boiling water. Then they poured out a cup of tea for

each person. Now, most people just put a tea bag straight into a cup of boiling
water, and the tea is ready to drink. The teapot became old fashioned, and is
not often used today.
