LA2 - How Clean is Our Environment?

Name: Abelgas, Ed Michael L.

Date: February 15, 2022

Objectives:

 To know the microorganism found in our environment

 To understand the health risk from being exposed from micro organisms

Materials:

Observations:

Video 1: Toilet Bathroom

1. Describe how bacteria contaminate our toiletries and shower supplies

In this video, it demonstrates and show how contagious and fast can the
bacteria contaminate spread to our so called safe space or bathroom. In just a
span of seconds, the things that we use and thought to help us clean our body
are contaminated by unwanted bacteria. During these times, we are vulnerable.
Because thinking that we are in a bathroom to be clean and washed, not
knowing that we are letting ourselves be opened to unwanted bacteria coming
to our bodies.
Video 2: Worms
2. Some fish are infected with worms which can only be detected using the
proper equipment during inspection. Do you think that it is safe to eat raw fish
(kinilaw, Sushi or sashimi etc)? Explain why.

The video showcases how much of the things we don’t know. Even the food
that we are used to eat. In this video, proves that much of the unwanted
worms and living organism or bacteria comes inside to our body without us
even knowing. The video show, a special detecting equipment used by
professionals and scientists to determine and inspect the food that goes to
our market. A good example is the food presented in the video. A raw fish that
will later turn to a sashimi— a famous delicacy in Japan and later sought to
be a worldwide favourite food. It is seen that fresh from the raw fish, there is a
so called nematodes. A kind of worm that is seen mostly in the internals of the
animals.

Video 3: A Dogs Mouth

3. How can microorganism carried by pets transfer to the pet owner’s body?

This video shows that a human mouth is dirtier than a dog’s mouth. There are
a lot of factors that this could happen. One could be because of the food we
eat, second, could be because of our unsanitary habits and gestures, and many
more. In the video, they have used a special equipment used in detecting how
dirty a saliva. And that is through swab and testing in an ATP (adenosine
triphosphate) equipment that can show how much of bacteria is on the surface
and the sample taken. Also, an eye opener of how much a cycle bacteria could
go in our body and surrounding. Example of that is how the dogs lick their body
and could possibly get a pin worm and that could also possibly transfer to your
body. If your pet licks you, big chances that they might transfer it to you. These
kind of worms could live inside our body and could multiply easily.
Video 4: Cough Grosser than Sneeze?
4. Which can project more germs/Microorganism coughing or Sneezing? Explain
why.

In the video shows how sneezing gets to project more bacteria in a single
second. Lingering in 5, 000 bacteria in a single second. Which can travel twice
the speed of the cough. It has bigger and smaller droplets that spread
throughout the surrounding. The variation of droplets spreading because of a
single sneeze, contains different kind of bacteria that you can get. While in the
other hand, a typical cough starts with a deep breath, followed by a
compression of air in the lungs and then a crackling burst as that air is forced
out in a fraction of a second. This could project a thousand of bacteria but not
that much compared to sneeze.

Video 5: Body Fluids

5. Which is cleaner a toilet or a Gym? What are body fluids? What health risk
from being exposed to body fluids?

Definitely a gym is more contagious and dirty. Because it contains several

thousand more bacteria than the toilet. The gym is a place where we sweat and
produces secretion in our bodies. The sweat of a person contains amino acid
in which upon exposure to bacteria, it spreads. Bacteria can easily spread and
react to amino acid because it needed to survive through sweat. These body
fluids are what we call secretion, the fluids that our body releases when doing
actions and movement. And reality is, we all sweat and with that, all of us are
expose to body fluids. Which can be dangerous and contagious. Especially if
two person is sharing same things. Big chances are they might they get both
the mixed up of bacteria. Which can cause to some illnesses like cold, flu, and
other transmitted virus illness.
Video 5: Fly vomits
6. Can food still safe to eat after a fly landed on your food? Explain

No, because fly is infectious. It contains a lot of bacteria and germs with it. If a
fly landed on your food, better to throw already instead of eating it still.
Because flies are also feasting on other dirty and unsanitary things. Like
garbage(s) and feces.

Conclusions:

Observing health protocols and practicing health measures should not be only
done when you just feel it to. But instead it should be normalize and making a habit.
Because health is everything and it is very vital for us to have healthy body especially in
the times of pandemic. Bacteria and diseases are everywhere and can be contagious. It
might infect and transmit to us without us even knowing. With these, it is very evident that
we should be mindful of the gestures, practices, habits, and even surroundings that we
have to this day. Never take things for granted and make clean as a habit and as a life.
