 HISTORY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


Chinese & Greeks- recognized as having been the leaders in developing the arts
Ancient Greeks- contribute much to the importance of the body and soul
Olympic Games -one of the most significant contribution and tangible results of Greeks

 Spanish time
- Physical Education did not include as part of school curriculum
- Religious holidays

 1900’s: American time


▧ Public Schools- made education possible for more students, girls as well as boys.
▧ Physical Activities- were include to their curriculum. Basketball and softball were introduced.
▧ 1920- Physical Education became a required subject;
much of the time was devoted to formal exercise and mass demonstration.
▧ 1946- Physical Education and Health
▧ Education became required subjects after independence

 Physical Education in college


▧ College athletics received a major stimulus when a National Collegiate Athletic Association was
created in the early twentieth centuries. There was a rise in popularity of sports within colleges
and universities and funding greatly increased.
▧ There was also a surge in people who enrolled in sports education programs to meet the
growing demand for professionals in the field.
 Physical Education
-It is an integral part of education program design to promote the optimum development of an
individual physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, and morally/spiritually in the performance of the
practical activities.

 PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


▧ In developing the highest human potential in mind and body is to transcend social, political and
cultural differences, and that is sports.
 ▧ More that the physical and mental development is the formation of admirable character that makes
sports incomparable to any human activity. If education teaches values, sports practice values.
-In 1989, the law that created the Philippine Sports Commission tightened and formalized the
development and promotion of sports as a universal language of development.

▧ Republic Act 6847, speaks the need to make sports accessible to the most significant number of Filipinos
▧ 1990- Creating the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) was signed by President Corazon C. Aquino

 1987 PHILIPPINE CONSTITUTION


▧ Section 19. The State shall promote physical education and encourage sports programs,league
competitions, and amateur sports,including training for international competitions, to foster self-
discipline, teamwork, and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.

 The ff. dictates the upgrade and development of sports in nurturing healthy, disciplined, and peaceful
Filipino citizenry:
- Section 6-(b), RA 6847. To encourage wide participation of all sectors, government and private, in
amateur sports promotion and development.

- Executive Order No. 651. this strengthens the grassroots program of the Philippine sports
commission which is in line with the Medium-term Philippine Development Plan for strengthening the
education of core subjects like math, science, and english.

 Direction of Philippine Sports in all three levels sports practice:

 Sports for all- developing the mind-set that being fit is not based only in the muscles, speed and stamina.
This needs determination, discipline, and dedication. It gives development to your mental toughness, and
overcome unexpected adversities posed by economic and political uncertainties

 Grassroots sports development- is to motivate the interest and preparations for high-level athletic
development. It provides opportunities and appropriate training in order to establish long–term improvement
of a sports performance, achieving a high-performance state of a junior athlete.

 Elite Sports- refer to high-performance sports. The ultimate level for an athlete can be achieved based on
performance. This measures the excellence of an athletic skill in international competitions, and also
measured in terms of medals and victories.
