PLASTIC WASTE AT MIDWAY

1. WHAT is the major environmental or societal issue? Describe a

consequence. The pollution of the ocean and that the garbage affects the
animals of the island

2. WHERE is it occurring? On the Midway island that is in the middle of the

pacific

3. HOW is this issue caused? The garbage that is in the ocean arrives on the
island by the current of the sea.

4. WHO are the primary people, communities, or key players (people and/or
organizations) impacted by this issue (positively or negatively) and HOW is
it impacting them? The most affected are the animals of the place, but the
people affected are those who consume those animals.

5. WHAT might be a possible solution to this issue? inform people about the
contamination in the place, install nets at points near the beaches so that
the largest plastic does not reach the island and prevent animals from
consuming them.

6. Find another location that is experiencing a similar issue. WHERE is this

location and HOW is it similar to (or different from) the case study issue?
It is very similar to the previous island because it still suffers from a lot of
garbage that comes from the ocean, due to being in the plastic garbage
patch.
SUMMARY

Midway Island is located in the middle of the Pacific, it is a plastic

waste filter that floats in the ocean, thanks to this waste, the island is
full of bird skeletons because they fill their stomachs with caps,
toothbrushes and other garbage, instead of food, many pieces of
plastic cut their stomachs and die.
It is a sacred place but the ocean currents increasingly fill it with
garbage, this also affects the animals that live in the sea, they eat small
plastics and die, just as this garbage is destroying the reefs, some nets
destroy and trap them to the fishes.
This problem comes to us, many fish ingest too small plastics, the
people who catch the fish take it to the cities to sell it, not knowing that
the fish is detained by plastic that probably has chemicals. When
eating fish, these chemicals enter our body, causing us to get sick. The
meat of the fish reaches our stomach and decomposes, but the
plastics reach our intestines and hurt them, causing illness and even
death.
Also one of the consequences is water pollution that causes climate
changes and this makes it difficult for animals to find food. They try to
clean the island but it is impossible because thousands of more objects
arrive every day.
