Summary

The father of modern linguistics, Ferdinand

Saussure, also developed a model of
communication, as is well known. The way it
works is that a thought or notion sets off a
mental sound pattern, which in turn
prompts the real pronunciation sound to
emerge quickly from our mouths. Saussure
confirmed that the real sound that comes
from our mouths differs from the sound
pattern. Chinese D and T, which have
identical sound patterns, serve as an
illustration of this.
