Safe Work Procedures for: Delivery, Unloading, Storage and Transferring of

Materials

PURPOSE To ensure that materials are delivered to work site, unload, stored and transferred
in a safe manner, and without risks to other road users and workers inside the site
RESPONSIBILITIES The manager and supervisor shall ensure that the driver perform their work in a safe
manner. The safe procedures for the delivery, unloading, storage and transferring of
materials must be communicated to the workers.

The workers shall ensure that instructions on the unloading, storage and
transferring materials are being adhered to.

PROCEDURES
Unloading of Materials

a. Proper PPEs such as safety shoes, hand gloves and long sleeve
clothing are to be worn by workers before commencing unloading
works

b. Site supervisor to ensure that the lorry / truck is parked on stable and
level ground before unloading.

c. No one is to stand near the area of work, in case the load gives way.

d. Workers hand should not be place under the materials during the
placing of materials on the ground.

e. 1 worker should not carry more than 20kg of load at any time.

f. Loose materials such as cement must be wrapped and secured to


prevent falling of materials during the unloading process

g. Site supervisor is to supervise the unloading work at all times.

h. Adequate numbers of workers are to be involved in the unloading work


to minimize the likelihood of back injuries to workers.

i. Coordination between workers is required during material transfer so


that there will not be any accidental release of the materials.

j. Sharp edges of the load are to be removed or protected and workers


are to wear proper PPE such as hand gloves, safety shoes, and
protective clothing.

Storage of Materials and Tools

a. The materials are to be stored on stable and level ground and kept
below 1.2m in height.

b. A passageway of minimum 1m must be demarcated for emergency


escape, and for easy access within the storage area.

c. A designated area is to be provided for the storage of the materials.

d. The materials must be stacked in a neat and safe manner and proper
housekeeping of the storage area must be maintained.

e. All tools should be kept properly in tool box

f. Electrical cables shall be coiled in a neat manner during storage.

g. Storage area to be cordoned off with warning signage.

h. All sharp edges to be protected or removed to prevent any sharp


injuries to workers.

Transferring of Materials

a. Manual handling equipment shall be used for handling of heavy loads.

b. Loads are to be secured before transferring the materials on manual


handling equipment, such as wheel barrow or pallet jack, to other work
areas.

c. More workers is to be assigned to transfer the load if it is in a large


quantity.

d. Supervisor or an assigned worker is to inspect the route to be used to


ensure that there are no obstacles along the route.

Human Factor

a. Workers to have sufficient and uninterrupted rest the night before

b. Workers to maintain proper posture when lifting material.

c. Supervisor to ensure a workers have a work rotation if prolong work is


required so workers have sufficient recharge time before working again

Emergency Response Procedures

a. Site Supervisor shall inform main contractor and raise the alarm should
an emergency occurs.

b. Emergency access and escape route shall be established and remain


unobstructed during the course of work.

c. Serviceable fire extinguisher shall be made available at the work area


at all times.

d. First aider of the worksite shall be made known to the workers in case
of emergency.

e. Workers shall be briefed on the workplace emergency escape route


and assembly area.

f. All workers shall be given a list of emergency contact numbers to


summon for assistance should an emergency arise.
