PART OF SPEECH

The words in the English language are grouped into parts of speech according to their
meanings and functions. There are eight parts of speech.
1. Noun
Noun is a word used as the name of anything–a person, an animal, an object, a
place, a situation, a quality or an idea.
Example:
a. Take your book, please!
b. They saw tiger in the zoo
c. Zahra is listening to the radio

2. Pronoun
A pronoun is a word used as a substitute for a noun.
Example:
a. Tony says that he has finished the work
b. Jessie weighs herself everyday
c. This is my car

3. Verb
A verb is a word that tells of an action or state of being and the time of when it is.
a. Alfian studies Grammar
b. We are walking to school
c. He is a student

4. Adjective
An adjective is a word that qualifies a noun or pronoun by describing it.
a. We study English lesson
b. Harun is a diligent boy
c. Rahman has two pens
d. Here is our room

5. Adverb
An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
Example:
a. Ali runs quickly
b. This room is very large
c. That driver drives more slowly

6. Preposition
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relationship to some
other words in a sentence.
Example:
a. I cut meat with knife
b. The book is on the table
c. After swimming, I felt cold

7. Conjunction
A conjunction is a word used to connect one word to another word, or one sentence to
another sentence.
Example:
a. Rudi and Ali came yesterday
b. She is intelligent but lazy

8. Interjection
An interjection is an exclamatory word or phrase to express a sudden feeling of mind or
emotion.
Example:
a. Oh my God! What have you done?
b. Oh, look at the time!
c. Well, you must go now!

EXERCISE!
State the words below into part of speech!

I live in a house near the mountains. I have two brothers and one sister, and I was born last. My

father teaches mathematics, and my mother is a nurse at a big hospital. My brothers are very

smart and work hard in school. My sister is a nervous girl, but she is very kind. My grandmother

also lives with us. She came from Italy when I was two years old. She has grown old, but she is

still very strong. She cooks the best food!

My family is very important to me. We do lots of things together. My brothers and I like to go on

long walks in the mountains. My sister likes to cook with my grandmother. On the weekends we

all play board games together. We laugh and always have a good time. I love my family very

much.
