昨晚，大半夜没睡觉的我听见楼道里传来了猫叫。我颇感奇怪，这小区流行养狗不时
兴养猫，何况现在也没到春天。过了一个小时，猫叫还在，而且清晰如在门外，我决
定出门看看。

楼道里的声控灯开了，一眼就能看见楼梯上的猫咪，黄黄的小小的一只，大概只有几
个月大。我蹲下尝试叫它过来，它不依，瞬间跑到楼上，我跟过去，它看我跟上来，
没往楼上跑，反而飞快地从我身旁往楼下跑，我叹了口气，又往下追，结果它迅速闪
进了一扇门后，而那扇门，就是我家。呵，正中下怀是不是就是这么个意思？

我慢慢踱步进屋，砰地甩上门，看着沙发底下的猫咪发笑——你跑吧，跑断腿也跑不
出我手掌心；你叫吧，叫破喉咙也没人理你。结果它还真的一直叫还到处跑，最后躲
在鞋柜里。依我十几年养狗的经验，我走近厨房不慌不忙掰了一点昨天买的鲮鱼罐头
和晚餐的剩肉。说起来奇怪，罐头鱼我大半年没买了，昨天突然买了一罐，天意吧。
鱼肉和水都备好，放到鞋柜前，它嗅了嗅，却一直发出示威的咕咕声。我劝了几句“吃
吧吃吧何必呢”就关灯睡觉了。猫咪现在太紧张了，让它冷静一下，自己就会吃。

无奈它一边吃还是一边叫，吃完在屋里四处跑，还是不停地叫。我试着去回应它，发
现只有轻柔的鬼叫才能让它安静下来，鬼叫一停它就鬼叫。于是我就躺在床上对着空
气鬼叫到天亮，气都没了，我俩才各自睡着。

2 十点多醒来，发现它睡在衣柜底下墙角处。我引诱了半天没出来，于是我把一个很大
的纸袋放在它面前，还有食物和水。昨晚的宵夜它就吃了鲮鱼，猪肉估计太硬了，它
不爱吃，其实我也不爱吃。过了一会儿，它自己钻到纸袋里躲了起来。我拎起纸袋，
伸手一摸，才发现它好瘦好瘦，而且全身颤抖。我就一直鬼叫着抚摸它的头，直到我
摸它下巴侧脸的时候感觉到它的回应，我心里一阵温暖。帮它擦掉眼屎和身上的土，
它渐渐不抖了。我想这应该不是家猫，不然不会这么怕人。我试着把它抱出来，它挣
脱，又躲到衣柜底下。

好吧，信任是得慢慢建立的。去买点猫沙，这儿就是它的家了。

Last night, still up despite the late hour, I heard a cat's cry coming from the hallway. I
thought it was strange – the people in this community tend to have dogs, not cats,
and it was still winter. An hour passed and the cat continued to cry, its meow so
clear it sounded like it was right outside my door, so I decided to take a look.

The sound activated light in the hallway as I came out, and I immediately saw a
small cat on the stairs. He was a little yellow kitten, probably not more than a few
months old. I squatted down and tried to call him over, but he wouldn't listen, and in
a sudden motion, bounded up the stairs. I followed him, and when he saw that I was
following he stopped heading up the stairs and suddenly shot downstairs. I sighed
and turned to follow again and he suddenly veered into an open door – my open
door. Ah, exactly what I had hoped would happen.

I slowly walked into the room, swung the door closed with a thud, and then, on
seeing the kitten sitting beneath my couch, laughed. Run all you want, run until you
break your legs for all I care, little kitten, but there's no escaping me! Cry all you
want, cry until your throat is sore, but nobody's going to care! The little kitten really
did keep crying, though, and running back and forth, before hiding himself in a shoe
cabinet. Drawing on my more than a decade of dog raising experience, I leisurely
strolled into the kitchen, got a little chunk of canned fish that I bought yesterday, and
some leftover meat from dinner. What's strange is that I hadn't bought canned fish in
forever, and then yesterday I suddenly bought a can – must be the work of a higher
power. I prepared the fish, meat, and water, and placed it in front of the shoe
cabinet. He sniffed for a while, but never stopped emitting an angry growl. I tried to
convince him – "Come on, just eat, just eat, what's the matter?" – and then turned off
5 the light and went to sleep. The kitten was too worked up, but once he cooled down,
he'd eat on his own.

The poor little guy just cried and ate, ate and cried, and when he was done eating he
returned to running back and forth around the room, his cry never failing. I tried to
answer him, and found that the only way to cool him down was to softly meow back
at him, and as soon as I stopped meowing, he'd start again. I was lying on the bed
meowing at the ceiling to nobody in particular when exhaustion came, and we were
finally able to sleep.

I woke up after ten AM and found him sleeping under one corner of the dresser. I
tried to lure him out for a while, and put a big paper bag on the floor facing him,
together with food and water. During the night, he'd eaten the fish. I guess the pork
was too hard, and that he doesn't like to eat pork – honestly, I don't much like pork
either. After a while, he got up and hid himself inside the paper bag. I picked the bag
up off the ground and reached inside to pet him, which was when I discovered how

very thin he was, and felt how his entire body trembled. I softly meowed while petting
his head. It was only when I pet his chin and the side of his face that I felt him react,
and his reaction warmed my heart. I wiped his eyes clean and got the dirt out of his
fur, and he slowly stopped trembling. I suspect that he wasn't someone's pet or else
he wouldn't be so afraid of people. I tried to get him to leave but he refused, once
again hiding under the dresser.

Fine, I get it – trust takes time. I guess I'll go buy some cat litter since this is his
house now.
