English
Death and Rebirth
Because my older sister works at a hospital in my hometown, it's often from her that
I first hear about what's happening with my classmates and friends. Now, I'm not
going to tell you that so-and-so was sick yesterday, and so-and-so had the runs
before that, but there are two events that always catch my attention. The first is
when so-and-so had a baby, which always makes me jealous. The second is when
so-and-so has died, which makes me feel even worse. In my experience, the things
that I learn from my sister are never good things.
Really, my friend's name is pretty interesting. She's absolutely an angel of a girl, but
her name is wicked – it sounds the same as "murder." Of course her parents didn't
realize this when they gave her this name because in our local dialect her name
sounds like how you'd describe a butterfly floating on the wind – you know, sweet,
angelic. Sadly for us though, we went to school, and again more sadly, went to
university where we had no choice but to speak Mandarin. When her name was
translated into Mandarin, it became "murder." When teachers called roll, it was like,
"Zhang San, Murder, Li Si." Despite this, my first reaction shocked my sister.
She died a very violent death. From what I understand, her boyfriend was taking her
home on his motorcycle, but snowfall had made the roads slick, and they were hit
head-on by a car and had died on that road. Her face was destroyed, her entire
head deformed by the impact. The driver that caused the accident fled and her
boyfriend has disappeared, too. I guess after the accident, he was just too afraid to
stay.
The next day, I got online and suddenly discovered that my friend's website had
been updated not more than an hour before. What? It couldn't be a ghost, could it?
After thinking it over for a while, I decided there were three possibilities – one, her
younger brother had updated her website, like how I sometimes update my
boyfriend's website; two, my friend really hadn't died and my sister was wrong; three,
even in the afterlife my friend kept blogging, but of course this was impossible. I
immediately picked up the phone and called home to find out what had happened,
and as it turned out, my friend hadn't died at all! The deceased was someone else
who just happened to have the same surname, the same given name, and the same
hometown. I immediately felt the relief wash over me… Man!
I no longer felt upset. I didn't feel upset, though, because the person that died didn't
matter to me. What I did feel, though, was a nagging feeling that I was heartless. My
friend is a human being and, what, the other person isn't? Why wasn't I concerned
about the other person? Why do such horrible things happen all around the world
every day? It's like disaster just falls from the sky, smashing down onto people's
heads. Even if we just hide in our rooms all day, bad luck can come calling. Thinking
about it, bad things happen every day, and some people are constantly unlucky.
Maybe those people were just fated to lead unhappy lives, each glass of water just
another chance to choke to death. Then again, maybe it's just that every day there
are countless births and countless deaths, and if I felt bad about all of them, would I
6 even have enough sorrow in my heart to give? In the end, as long as my friend is
safe, I'm relieved.
