electromagnetic pulses. These can come from several natural and man-made sources so I started
with electromagnetic pulses from the sun and looked to the national weather service, NOAA and
NASA. Through these organizations' websites I found quite a few info graphics that detail how
the sun can eject large amounts of material in what we call a solar flare. The radiation from the
flare can then reach the Earth and depending on the intensity harm electronic devices here on
earth.
Tuesday- continuing off of the topic from yesterday I began to look at resources on defending
against electromagnetic pulses from the department of homeland security and the CISA. I was
thankful to find a number of documents that went into great detail about how the individual and
the local government could protect their vital electronic equipment from a large electromagnetic
pulse. Many of these documents were over 100 pages so it took me quite a while to get through a
few of them.
Wednesday – I spent today finishing up my reading of the other electromagnetic pulse defense
documents and began the process of creating a shortened version with only the most vital and
pertinent information from the document. Condensing all of this information took quite a while.
Thursday- now that I had all of the information properly condensed I began organizing it into a
well easily legible fact sheet that could be distributed to civilians as a piece of precautionary
Friday– going back to the research phase my supervisor wanted me to look into electromagnetic
pulses caused by nuclear explosions and if there were any protocols available in that kind of
situation. While plans for nuclear generated electromagnetic pulses do exist it is only as a
formality because if nuclear warheads begin dropping out of the sky then we might have more
serious issues to worry about then whether or not most of our electronics work.
