Read the scenarios, reflect on these critically and creatively, and answer the questions.
Task
Scenario 1
Your parents have just announced to you and your siblings that they have decided to move
overseas. They are very excited about this decision. In 2 months, you will be moving to a new
country and attending a new school. You have absolutely no wish to move overseas, leave all of
your friends, learn to speak another language, go to a new school.
Question 1
Who are two (2) people with whom you could discuss this issue?
Your parents and discuss with them why you don't want to move
Your siblings and ask for their opinions
Question 2
List three (3) questions that you could ask yourself in trying to resolve this issue and find solutions.
Question 3
What do you think your parents might have assumed in making this decision?
They assumed that you would also be excited to move as well and that you wouldn't mind moving
schools.
Question 4
What are some questions you can ask them in order to challenge those assumptions in discussing this
with them?
You can ask them why they didn't tell you sooner and why they are moving out of the country without
asking their children first.
Question 5
Outline three (3) possible solutions to this problem – remember that you can think as creatively as you
like. For each possible solution, outline 1-2 obstacles that may prevent this being used to resolve the
problem.

Scenario 2
You have been working part-time at McDonalds for the past month at the front registers. Your
manager has just asked you to shift to a role cooking burgers. You have no experience working with
stoves, have never cooked, and you are vegan and would prefer not to have to handle meat.
Question 1
Who are two (2) staff members (outline their roles) with whom you could discuss this issue?
You could discuss this with your manager and ask not to be moved or you could discuss it with other
employees working at the register and arrange to switch positions.

List three (3) questions that you could ask yourself in trying to resolve this issue and find solutions.

They might have assumed that you weren't a vegan and that even if you were you would be wearing
gloves so it wasn't a big deal.

When I was in a group project nd we kept getting into arguments about how to do things. If we had
calmly talked to each other we would have been able to find a solution much faster than arguing about it.

Imagine that one of your friends/classmates also works with you at McDonalds. Discuss this scenario with
your friend and outline your possible solutions and their obstacles. Note below ways in which this
discussion has changed your ideas and given you different ways of thinking about this.
Quitting the job - You don't have job and McDonalds might have been the only place hiring.
