Personal Development
Module 10:
Family Structure, Genogram and
Deeper Family Relations
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.
Target

The family is considered the first place where growing children learn their basic
social skills. The interaction and quality of relationship between parent and child is to
determine the child’s future relationships as he or she matures toward adulthood.

This learning material is in three parts:

Lesson 1 will provide you with information and activities that discusses one’s
family structure and the type of care he/she gives and receives, which may help in
understanding himself/herself better.

In lesson 2, you are going to get your answers for the “whys”- why is my nose flat,
or my skin so fair? and discover the “from whom” of your physical, personality, or
behavioral attributes. In other words, you will be able to understand better yourselves
by being able to identify from whom you got those physical characteristics and
personality traits you have.

While in lesson 3, you will learn the importance of belonging to a family and learn
ways to deepen and strengthen the bonds you have as you traverse life’s journey.

Now, at the end of the lesson, you are expected to be able to…

1. appraise one’s family structure and the type of care he/she gives and receives,
which may help in understanding himself/herself better.
2. make a genogram and trace certain physical, personality, or behavioral
attributes through generations (EsP-PD11/12FSL-IId), and
3. prepare a plan on how to make the family members firmer and gentler with each
other (EsP-PD11/12FSL-IId-e11.3)

Subtasks:
1. identify the different family structures
2. discuss the type of care a person gives and receives that may help in underdoing
himself better
3. illustrate genogram of your family
4. compare family structures of different families
5. evaluate one’s family structure
6. design a plan on how to make family members firmer and gentler with each other

Before we discuss, answer first the activities on the next page which
prepares you for the lesson to be learned in this learning material.

FAMILY STRUCTURES

The traditional family structure is considered a family support system which

involves two married individuals providing care and stability for their biological offspring.
However; these two parents have become less prevalent, and alternative family forms
have become more common. The family is created at birth and establishes ties across
generations. Those generations, the extended family of aunts, uncles, grandparents, and
cousins, can all hold significant emotional and economic roles for the nuclear family.

Different kinds of family structures:

1. Nuclear family – A family unit consisting of at most a father, mother and dependent
children. It is considered the “traditional” family.
2. Extended family - A family consisting of parents and children, along with either
grandparents, grandchildren, aunts or uncles, cousins etc. In some circumstances,
the extended family comes to live either with or in place of a member of the nuclear
family.
3. Step families – Two families brought together due to divorce, separation, and
remarriage.
4. Single parent family - This can be either a father or a mother who is singly
responsible for the raising of a child. The child can be by birth or adoption. They may
be single parent by choice or by life circumstances. The other parent may have been
part of the family at one time or not at all.
5. Adoptive family – A family where one or more of the children has been adopted. Any
structure of family may also be an adoptive family.
6. Bi-racial or multi-racial family – A family where the parents are members of different
racial identity groups.
7. Trans-racial adoptive family – A family where the adopted child is of a different
racial identity group than the parents.
8. Blended family – A family that consists of members from two (or more) previous
families.
9. Conditionally separated families - A family member is separated from the rest of
the family. This may be due to employment far away; military service, incarceration;
hospitalization. They remain significant member of the family.
10.Foster family – A family where one or more of the children is legally a temporary
member of the household. This temporary period may be as short as a few days or as
long as the child’s entire childhood.
11.Gay or Lesbian family – A family where one or both of the parents’ sexual orientation
is gay or lesbian. This may be a two-parent family, an adoptive family, a single family
or an extended family.
12.Immigrant family – A family where the parents have immigrated to another country
as adults. Their children may or may not be immigrants. Some family members may
continue to live in the country of origin but still be significant figures in the life of the
child.
13.Migrant family – A family that moves regularly to places where they have
employment. The most common form of migrant family is farm workers who move

4
_Module7 LU_Personal Development_Module10
with the crop seasons. Children may have a relatively stable community of people who
move at the same time – or the family may know no one in each new setting. Military
families may also lead a migrant life with frequent relocation often on short notice.

THE GENOGRAM
What is a genogram?
A genogram or family tree is a useful tool to gather information about a person’s
genealogy or family descent. This visual representation of a family can help us to identify
patterns or themes within families that may be influencing or driving a person’s current
behavior.

Symbols use for drawing the genogram or family tree:

Female symbol -name, age

Male symbol -name, age

Unknown gender

Married - add the year or

ages
De facto relationship - commencement
date or ages
Separation -date or ages

Divorce - date or ages

Death - a small cross in the corner of the symbol

X (record date if known)

Dotted circle - this can be used to enclose the

members living together currently, for example,
who the young person is living with

Conflictual relationship

Very close relationship

Distant relationship

DEEPENING THE FAMILY RELATIONSHIP

Today’s family are busy. Schedules are filled with work, school, afterschool
activities, community service and others. It can be challenging to find quality time and
increase bonding with family members. Building a family that supports and encourages
one another takes energy and time. Try the following tips to strengthen the bonds within
your family.

Tips to Strengthen the Bonds with your Family:

1. Be kind to one another. Kids learn through experiences and modeling. Show acts of
kindness daily by simply helping your parents in doing household chores, cooking,
setting the table, giving them presents especially on special occasions like birthdays
or Christmas.
2. Eat dinner together. Meal time is excellent to share your day with your family. This
is a time where open communication takes place. Congratulate those who did well
and follow up on things about important matters. According to studies, kids who

6
_Module7 LU_Personal Development_Module10
regularly eat meals with their family have higher academic scores and reduced use of
alcohol, tobacco and drug use.
3. Experience life together. Do things as a family. Jam as a family by playing musical
instruments together, going out for a hike, playing sports as a team, going to the gym
and etc.
4. Enjoy a family game night. Play interactive games with family members. Build teams
and promote a friendly competition.
5. Laugh. Laughter is good for the soul. Share funny videos or story with each one.
Laughing reduces stress and stimulates your immune system.
6. Travel. Plan a trip together as a family. Choose a destination for your adventure where
you think everyone will be having fun. Experience new things like foods, culture or
activities. If you are on a tight budget, plan for a camping trip.
7. Show appreciation. Simply using the magic word “thank you” makes family members
feel valuable. Others who may not be very vocal may show it through the use of notes
on the table with a smiley or heart on it.
8. Try new things. Doing things for the first time may be scary like riding a roller coaster
ride, performing on stage but doing it with family members reduces fear and promotes
courage.
9. Volunteer as family. Serving the community helps the family members feel connected
and socially adept. Caring and sharing to the less fortunate teaches compassion and
empathy for others.
10.Give compliments. Make a practice to say something kind to each person in your
family. Strong families teach us how to function in the world. They are always there
for us in our ups and downs in life. Spend quality time interacting with each of the
family members for this strengthens the bond, builds character and improves self-
esteem.

As society progresses and diversity is more acknowledged by many, new

variations of the basic family structures are surfacing such as interracial marriages,
adoptive families and lately same-sex marriages. More and more countries are allowing
same-sex marriages today and more are following what is becoming a norm.
